Assessing the value of cultural ecosystem services in urban landscapes: evidence from Tai’an City, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science
Cultural ecosystem services (CES) refer to the intangible benefits provided by ecosystems to enhance the quality of human life. As cultural services are an important part of ecosystem services, how to account for the value of cultural ecosystem services ...

Closed‐Loop Radiative Cooling Mulch Upcycled From Agricultural Residues for Efficient Soil Heat–Water Stress Mitigation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Conventional passive radiative cooling films rely on costly feedstocks and energy‐intensive fabrication, with poor end‐of‐life compatibility in agriculture. To address this challenge, a sustainable radiative cooling mulch (SRCM) is developed from waste maize leaves via spontaneous hydrogen‐bond self‐assembly.

Learning Moisture‐Induced Damage From Vision: Diffusion Models for Real‐Time Monitoring of Additive Manufacturing Processes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We introduce a vision‐based real‐time monitoring system for additive manufacturing that detects subtle moisture‐induced degradation via a diffusion model‐based framework. The approach enables nondestructive assessment of moisture‐induced damage level and mechanical performance and establishes a practical route toward more intelligent, reliable, and ...

Co-creating urban ecosystem accounting: Physical and monetary accounts of runoff retention service provided by urban green spaces

open access: yes
Highlights • We compiled an ecosystem extent, supply and use accounts of runoff retention service. • The InVEST Urban Flood Mitigation Model was used to calculate the amount of on-site runoff retention.

Solar‐Driven Bifunctional Adsorption‐Storage Films for Ultra‐Fast Dehumidification and Freshwater Supply in Low‐carbon Buildings

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Bifunctional adsorption‐storage films enable autonomous indoor humidity regulation and freshwater harvesting, rapidly decreasing relative humidity from 90.7% to 21.6% within one hour while producing 1.1 kg·m−2·day−1 of water, offering a passive route towards energy‐efficient humidity control and sustainable indoor environments. ABSTRACT Indoor humidity

Progress and challenges in the development of ecosystem accounting as a tool to analyse ecosystem capital

open access: yes, 2015
Ecosystem accounting has been developed as a systematic approach to incorporate measures of ecosystem services and ecosystem assets into an accounting structure. Ecosystem accounting involves spatially explicit modelling of ecosystem services and assets,

A Single‐Cell Transcriptomic Atlas of the Ovine Rumen Microbiome Characterizes Lineage‐Specific Metabolic Shifts Associated with Host Heat Tolerance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An optimized single‐cell transcriptomic framework profiles over 60 000 cells to map the ovine rumen microbiome, partitioning the ecosystem into seven cross‐species functional clusters. In heat‐resistant hosts, a lineage‐specific metabolic shift in Anaerovibrio lipolyticus toward a highly glycolytic phenotype contributes to a “nutritional sparing ...

Classifying Ecosystem Services for Economic Valuation: The case of forest water services

open access: yes
Since the release of the Millennium Ecosystem Approach (MEA), the number of studies valuing ecosystem services has grown. As a consequence of this growing literature, different interpretations exist on the classification of services as derived from MEA ...

Correcting Apparent Priming Bias Unveils Fertilizer Nitrogen‐Risk Archetypes of Surplus and Depletion Across Asian Rice Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Correcting the apparent priming effect resolves systematic biases in Asian rice fertilizer nitrogen accounting. Net soil retention drops below 7%, while 48% of fertilizer escapes, inflicting US$98.53 billion in annual reactive‐nitrogen damages. High‐resolution mapping uncovers N‐risk archetypes across 42% of the rice area, delivering a spatially ...
