How the ecosystem extent is changing: A national-level accounting approach and application

Science of the Total Environment, 2022
Assessing the spatial and temporal changes in ecosystems is essential to account for natural capital contribution to human well-being. However, various methods to quantify these changes challenge the development of reliable values which can be integrated into national statistical accounts.

REGIONAL EXTENT OF AN ECOSYSTEM ENGINEER: EARTHWORM INVASION IN NORTHERN HARDWOOD FORESTS [PDF]

open access: yesEcological Applications, 2007
The invasion of exotic earthworms into northern temperate and boreal forests previously devoid of earthworms is an important driver of ecosystem change. Earthworm invasion can cause significant changes in soil structure and communities, nutrient cycles, and the diversity and abundance of herbaceous plants.

Kinetic characteristics of the theoretical ecosystems with different extent of openness

Advances in Space Research, 2005
In this paper, the influence of the extent of openness of ecosystem that is defined by the dilution rate, which characterizes the extent of flowage of the pond, on the intensity of the biotic circulation in ecosystems with different regulation types, number of trophic links and extent of closing has been investigated.

Defining the extent of coastal zone for ecosystem-based management

2008 IEEE/OES US/EU-Baltic International Symposium, 2008
Two different approaches in defining coastal zone extent exist. One of them sets fixed boundaries to the coastal zone, and, thus, is easily adopted by decision-makers. Another approach follows distribution of a set of contiguous ecosystems, and is more accordant with the ecosystem-based management of the coastal zone.

To what extent can ecosystem services motivate protecting biodiversity?

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2017
AbstractSociety increasingly focuses on managing nature for the services it provides people rather than for the existence of particular species. How much biodiversity protection would result from this modified focus? Although biodiversity contributes to ecosystem services, the details of which species are critical, and whether they will go functionally

Tracking global change in ecosystem area: The Wetland Extent Trends index

Biological Conservation, 2016
We present a method for estimating broad trends in ecosystem area based on incomplete and heterogeneous data, developing a proof-of-concept for the first indicator of change in area of natural wetland, the Wetland Extent Trends (WET) index. We use a variation of the Living Planet Index method, which is used for measuring global trends in wild ...

Predicting Habitat Utilization and Extent of Ecosystem Disturbance by an Increasing Herbivore Population

Ecosystems, 2009
Herbivory can lead to shifts in ecosystem state or changes in ecosystem functioning, and recovery from herbivory is particularly slow in disturbance-sensitive ecosystems such as arctic tundra. Herbivore impacts on ecosystems are variable in space and time due to population fluctuations and selective utilization of habitats; thus there is a need to ...
