Assessing the extent and diversity of riparian ecosystems in Sonora, Mexico

Biodiversity and Conservation, 2008
Conservation of forested riparian ecosystems is of international concern. Relatively little is known of the structure, composition, diversity, and extent of riparian ecosystems in Mexico. We used high- and low-resolution satellite imagery from 2000 to 2006, and ground-based sampling in 2006, to assess the spatial pattern, extent, and woody plant ...

The ecosystem approach for apprehending the extent of postharvest grain losses

Phytoparasitica, 1981
The grain bulk in its environment is presented as an ecosystem, comprising biotic (grain, insects, microflora) and abiotic (dockage, intergranular air, water vapors, storage structure) elements. The effect of the stored grain bulk environment and microenvironment on each of the system components is analyzed, and the possible implications of these ...

Satellite-Based Assessment of the Extent and Changes in the Mangrove Ecosystem of the Niger Delta

Marine Geodesy, 2007
This study was carried out with the primary aim of understanding how the mangrove ecosystem in the Niger Delta has been altered recently. Specifically, we determined the spatial extent of the mangrove forest in the Niger Delta using remotely sensed satellite data and estimated changes in the spatial extent of the forest from the mid-1980s through 2003.

Ecosystem Service Relationships at the Global Extent

Ecosystem services, from food to climate regulation, are essential to human well-being. Yet these services are progressively threatened by global change, face increasing demands from increasing populations, and are more and more traded internationally, dislocating consumption from local environmental degradation.

Space-based Earth Observation and Ecosystem Extent: Exploring Opportunities

2023
The purpose of this white paper is to explore and communicate potential new opportunities for using space-based Earth observation (EO) for monitoring biodiversity with a focus on ecosystem extent (the distribution of ecosystems on the Earth). It is part of a new activity of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), a collaboration of the ...

Spatially-explicit uncertainty assessment of ecosystem extent mapping

Ecosystems are a key component of biodiversity, providing vital services to humans and the economy. Anthropogenic pressures driving environmental change result in widespread ecosystem degradation and loss. The area and spatial distribution of ecosystem types, referred to as ecosystem extent, provide a critical entry point for assessing ecosystem ...
