Microbes as Engines of Ecosystem Function: When Does Community Structure Enhance Predictions of Ecosystem Processes?

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
Microorganisms are vital in mediating the earth’s biogeochemical cycles; yet, despite our rapidly increasing ability to explore complex environmental microbial communities, the relationship between microbial community structure and ecosystem processes ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Underrated Links Mitigate the Fragmentation‐Induced Mutualism Breakdown in a Large‐Fruited Species

open access: yesConservation Letters
Seed dispersal is threatened in fragmented landscapes by the loss of frugivores, significantly undermining the persistence of large‐fruited plant species that rely on large‐bodied animals.

Shifts of community composition and population density substantially affect ecosystem function despite invariant richness.

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2017
There has been considerable focus on the impacts of environmental change on ecosystem function arising from changes in species richness. However, environmental change may affect ecosystem function without affecting richness, most notably by affecting ...

Is Young's Modulus a Critical Coating Property Determining Fouling‐Release Performance of Marine Coatings?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The release of foulers from protective marine coatings is determined by several interrelated material properties, including the strength of Young's modulus, the flexibility of chain segments, the surface free energy, and the magnitude of hydrodynamic stress.

Innovating Aircraft Repair Processes: The Role of Digitalization in Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This research explores how digitalization—by storing detailed non‐destructive testing data in structured DICONDE databases and creating a standard data model of the component—innovates aviation maintenance and repair processes. Coupled with a developed state‐based simulation model, it enables data‐driven, sustainable repair strategies that reduce waste,

Evaluating the Impact of Environmental Factors on Bacterial Populations in Riverine, Estuarine, and Coastal Sediments

open access: yesDiversity
Aquatic ecosystems, including rivers, estuaries, and coastal environments, are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, regulating nutrient cycles, and supporting human livelihoods. However, these ecosystems are increasingly being threatened by urbanization,

Biodiversity and Resilience of Ecosystem Functions [PDF]

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 2015
Accelerating rates of environmental change and the continued loss of global biodiversity threaten functions and services delivered by ecosystems. Much ecosystem monitoring and management is focused on the provision of ecosystem functions and services under current environmental conditions, yet this could lead to inappropriate management guidance and ...

Enabling Digital Continuity in Virtual Manufacturing for Eco‐Efficiency Assessment of Lightweight Structures by Means of a Domain‐Specific Structural Mechanics Language: Requirements, Idea and Proof of Concept

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a solver‐agnostic domain‐specific language (DSL) for computational structural mechanics that strengthens interoperability in virtual product development. Using a hierarchical data model, the DSL enables seamless exchange between diverse simulation tools and numerical methods.
