Shorebirds Affect Ecosystem Functioning on an Intertidal Mudflat

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Ecosystem functioning and services have provided a rationale for conservation over the past decades. Intertidal muddy sediments, and the microphytobenthic biofilms that inhabit them, perform crucial ecosystem functions including erosion protection ...

Dispersal-mediated trophic interactions can generate apparent patterns of dispersal limitation in aquatic metacommunities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Dispersal is a major organising force in metacommunities, which may facilitate compositional responses of local communities to environmental change and affect ecosystem function.

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

KIF11 UFMylation Maintains Photoreceptor Cilium Integrity and Retinal Homeostasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science
The photoreceptor cilium is vital for maintaining the structure and function of the retina. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the photoreceptor cilium integrity and retinal homeostasis are largely unknown.

De-extinction beyond species: Restoring ecosystem functionality through large herbivore rewilding

open access: yesCambridge Prisms: Extinction
This perspective positions rewilding as a novel approach to ecosystem restoration, emphasising the restoration of natural processes to create self-willed ecosystems.

A Lightweight Procedural Layer for Hybrid Experimental–Computational Workflows in Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We unveil a prototype hybrid‐workflow framework that fuses automatedcomputation with hands‐on experiments. Built atop pyiron, a lightweight, parameterized layer translates procedure descriptions into executable manual steps, syncing instrument settings, human interventions, and data capture in real‐time today.

Underrated Links Mitigate the Fragmentation‐Induced Mutualism Breakdown in a Large‐Fruited Species

open access: yesConservation Letters
Seed dispersal is threatened in fragmented landscapes by the loss of frugivores, significantly undermining the persistence of large‐fruited plant species that rely on large‐bodied animals.

The Origin, Succession, and Predicted Metabolism of Bacterial Communities Associated with Leaf Decomposition. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Intraspecific variation in plant nutrient and defensive traits can regulate ecosystem-level processes, such as decomposition and transformation of plant carbon and nutrients.

In Situ Constructed Magnetic Core‐Shell Hydrogen‐Bonded Organic Framework‐on‐Metal–Organic Framework Structure: an Efficient Catalyst for Peroxymonosulfate Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, a magnetic core‐shell catalyst (HOF‐on‐Fe3O4/ZIF‐67) is successfully synthesized, consisting of a metal–organic framework (ZIF‐67) with magnetic Fe3O4 as the core and a porous hydrogen‐bonded organic framework (HOF) as the shell. The catalyst efficiently activated peroxymonosulfate, resulting in rapid and effective removal of water ...
