Fish carcass deposition to suppress invasive lake trout through hypoxia causes limited, non‐target effects on benthic invertebrates in Yellowstone Lake

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 470-483, December 2022., 2022
In Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, lake trout carcasses are used to suppress invasive lake trout embryos in an effort to conserve native Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Using a field experiment, we determined that carcass treatment had limited, non‐target effects on benthic invertebrates.

An individual-based modelling approach to estimate landscape connectivity for bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2016
Background. Preserving connectivity, or the ability of a landscape to support species movement, is among the most commonly recommended strategies to reduce the negative effects of climate change and human land use development on species.

The restoration potential of offshore mussel farming on degraded seabed habitat

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 437-449, December 2022., 2022
Due to the artificial structures that accumulate mussels and exclude destructive fishing practices, the seabed could be restored by the installation of mussel farming structure. After four years, there was a significantly greater abundance of mobile taxa compared to the Controls that remained open to trawling. Commercial European lobster and brown crab

A Typology of Indigenous Engagement in Australian Environmental Management: Implications for Knowledge Integration and Social-ecological System Sustainability

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2012
Indigenous peoples now engage with many decentralized approaches to environmental management that offer opportunities for integration of Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK) and western science to promote cultural diversity in the management of social ...

Climatic Variability Caused by Topographic Barrier Prevents the Northward Spread of Invasive Ageratina adenophora

open access: yesPlants, 2022
Ageratina adenophora (Spreng.) R.M.King & H.Rob. is one of the most threatening invasive alien plants in China. Since its initial invasion into Yunnan in the 1940s, it spread rapidly northward to southern Mount Nyba in Sichuan, which lies on the eastern ...

The multifactorial aquaculture‐related COVID‐19 shock in Benin, West Africa: A socio‐economic perspective of mitigating the disruptive impacts on the small‐scale and subsistence producers

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 507-521, December 2022., 2022
Graphical Abstract This study deals with a timely topic, COVID‐19, whose impacts on aquaculture have never been quantified in Benin. Direct discussions were held with aquaculture producers to understand how they are feeling the impact of the pandemic on their business.

Uncertainty in soil data can outweigh climate impact signals in global crop yield simulations

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Global gridded crop models are increasingly used to assess climate change impacts on food production. Here, the authors assess crop yield uncertainty associated with soil data input, reporting that soil type strongly influences yield estimates, and may ...

Wildfires as an ecosystem service [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, 2019
Wildfires are often perceived as destructive disturbances, but we propose that when integrating evolutionary and socioecological factors, fires in most ecosystems can be understood as natural processes that provide a variety of benefits to humankind. Wildfires generate open habitats that enable the evolution of a diversity of shade‐intolerant plants ...

Utilising feed effectors and automated feeders for semi‐intensive pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) production

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 540-551, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Feed effectors have been suggested to improve the efficiency of plant‐based shrimp diets by increasing attractability and palatability. This research trial aimed to expand upon previous Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) research involving plant‐based diets, feed effectors and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) in a laboratory setting ...
