Impacts of land use change on diaspore‐dispersing ant assemblages in southwestern Amazonia

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Land use changes shift ant assemblages, more intensive land uses are dominated by generalist and open habitat specialist species engaging in group foraging. The diaspore removal rates cannot differ, but the quality of dispersal was lower in disturbed habitats.

The role of habitat simplification and seasonality in shaping interactions between ants, plants and herbivores in a neotropical savanna

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 2, Page 381-394, April 2026.
We evaluated how chronic anthropogenic disturbances (CAD) and seasonal variation influence interactions between ants and plants with extrafloral nectaries (EFN's), with emphasis on the responses of ants, herbivores, and plants. Ant and herbivore diversity remained stable across seasons in the preserved cerrado, whereas the pasture had higher ant ...

Discrimination of the Social Parasite Ectatomma parasiticum by Its Host Sibling Species (E. tuberculatum)

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2013
Among social parasites, workerless inquilines entirely depend on their host for survival and reproduction. They are usually close phylogenetic relatives of their host, which raises important questions about their evolutionary history and mechanisms of ...

Juvenile hormone downregulates vitellogenin production in Ectatomma tuberculatum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) sterile workers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In the ant Ectatomma tuberculatum (Olivier 1792), workers have active ovaries and lay trophic eggs that are eaten by the queen and larvae. Vitellogenins are the main proteins found in the eggs of insects and are the source of nutrients for the embryo in ...

Description of the immature and adult stages of Ectatomma vizottoi (Formicidae: Ectatomminae)

open access: yes, 2022
We estimated the number of larval instars of the ant Ectatomma vizottoi (Ectatomminae), by measuring the maximum width of the head capsules of 208 larvae and the morphology of the immature stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) and adults. There are three larval instars during the post-embryonic development. The reproductive eggs are dark brown.

Social interactions between an inquiline ant, Ectatomma parasiticum, and its host, Ectatomma tuberculatum (Formicidae, Ectatomminae)

open access: yesJournal of Ethology, 2008
Inquilines, workerless social parasites, frequently show advanced adaptations to their parasitic life style that indicate a long co-evolutionary history with their host. Ectatomma parasiticum, the first inquiline described in the poneromorph group, usurps established colonies of E. tuberculatum and produces only sexuals.
