Stability of twin circular tunnels in cohesive-frictional soil using the node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper presents an upper bound limit analysis procedure using the node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) and second order cone programming (SOCP) to evaluate the stability of twin circular tunnels in cohesive-frictional soils subjected to

Generalized Task‐Driven Design of Soft Robots via Reduced‐Order Finite Element Method‐Based Surrogate Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A unified, reusable modeling pipeline enables task‐driven design of soft robots across actuator families and task scenarios. High‐fidelity simulations are compressed into compact pseudo‐rigid‐body joint surrogates, while a design‐conditioned meta‐model generates new surrogates from geometry parameters without rerunning finite element method.

An edge-based smoothed finite element method with stabilized discrete shear gap technique for analysis of Reissner–Mindlin plates. Comput Methods Appl Mech Eng (revised)

open access: yes, 2009
An edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) using triangular elements was recently proposed to improve the accuracy and convergence rate of the existing standard finite element method (FEM) for the elastic solid mechanics problems.

One‐Shot Multimaterial 3D Printing of a Flexible Spine for a Robotic Fish Prototype

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A one‐shot multimaterial 3D printing approach enables a monolithic soft robotic fish integrating a compliant spine and rigid vertebrae. Electromagnetic linear actuators drive tendon‐based transmission, producing controlled tail oscillations. Finite element modeling and experiments show strong agreement, while optimized material selection improves ...

“Dead Lithium” Formation and Mitigation Strategies in Anode‐Free Li‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2025.
Anode‐free lithium metal batteries, though promising due to their high energy density, face challenges from dead lithium formation. “Dead lithium”, disconnected from the anode, causes capacity loss, increased resistance, and safety risks. This review explores the origins of dead lithium, its impact on battery performance, and potential strategies for ...

Topology optimization using node-based smoothed finite element method

open access: yes, 2015
The node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) proposed recently has shown very good properties in solid mechanics, such as providing much better gradient solutions.
