CHI '00 extended abstracts on Human factors in computer systems - CHI '00, 2000
In biology they describe as 'the edge effect' the tendency for a greater variety and density of organisms to cluster in the boundaries between communities. As in nature, so too in a networked economy: variety, density and interaction are success factors.

This module has students venturing outdoors to take a 50m transect and collect abundance data on plants utilizing quadrats in both edge and interior environment. Mathematically the goals of this module are to emphasize how sample size can influence data analysis and variance within the data set. Students perform calculations for species diversity using

Luminance gradients and edge effects
Vision Research, 1976Abstract Cornsweet (1970) summarized the evidence that the brightness sensation is not only related to luminance. He showed that apparently contradictory brightness sensations occur in the case of a specific light distribution near an edge. The same effect also occurs in the case of sawtooth light distributions.

Cost-Effective Edge Server Placement in Edge Computing
Proceedings of the 2019 5th International Conference on Systems, Control and Communications, 2019In a smart city powered by the 5G network, a large amount of data never seen before will be generated. The conventional cloud computing paradigm cannot fulfil users' needs, especially for low latency. The new edge computing paradigm is emerging to mitigate the this problem.

In the present article we survey papers on edge effects investigated by the rigorous approach. We interpret edge effects as stressed states created in a composite as a result of zones in which the stresses exhibit a rapidly changing behavior in comparison with the slow variation of the stresses outside such zones.

Edge Effects in Pressurized Membranes
Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2002Developing membrane structures for space-based applications is an effort to reduce launch mass and stowed volume. Accurate modeling of the shape after deployment is very important to the high-precision inflatable structures for space applications.
