Impact of Pre‐Treatment Serum Ferritin on Response and Survival in Myelodysplastic Syndromes Treated With Azacytidine: A Multivariate Analysis

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 14, Issue 15, August 2025.
Elevated serum ferritin levels before treatment with azacytidine are associated with lower response rates and shorter survival in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes. This study supports the early identification of transfusion‐related iron overload to improve treatment planning.

Optimising management against dynamic threats: A spatially explicit approach based on integer programming

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, Page 1868-1885, August 2025.
Abstract Defining strategies to control dynamic threats is a highly complex problem that is defined by the biological characteristics of the threatening agents (e.g. invasive species), the landscape context and the management objective within the constraints of limited financial resources.

First records of Aulacaspis tubercularis, Icerya seychellarum and Protopulvinaria pyriformis on Persea indica

open access: yesEPPO Bulletin, Volume 55, Issue 2, Page 328-334, August 2025.
Abstract Persea indica (Lauraceae) is an endemic evergreen tree of the Macaronesian Laurisilva forests, valued for its ecological importance, ornamental appeal and bioactive compounds. We report, for the first time, the presence of three scale insect species (Superfamily Coccoidea), namely Aulacaspis tubercularis, Icerya seychellarum and ...

Individual Behavioral Responses to Novel Stimuli in Breeding Common Terns (Sterna hirundo)

open access: yesEthology, Volume 131, Issue 8, Page 55-63, August 2025.
We analyzed behavioral responses of 42 breeding terns to novel stimuli, considering intrinsic characteristics. The response was repeatable, stronger (i.e., individuals approached slower) in females and during incubation. There was no evidence for assortative mating based on this trait.

WAGE DISTRIBUTION IN SPAIN, 1994-1999: AN APPLICATION OF A FLEXIBLE ESTIMATOR OF CONDITIONAL DISTRIBUTIONS [PDF]

open access: yes
To investigate the trends in wages in Spain in 1994-1999, we propose a flexible estimator of conditional distributions. The estimator, based on a piecewise-linear specification of the conditional hazard function, allows us to capture almost any ...

Doxorubicin Induces a Senescent Phenotype in Murine and Human Astrocytes

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 8, August 2025.
Astrocyte senescence contributes to brain aging and neurodegeneration, yet human‐relevant models remain scarce. We developed a doxorubicin‐based protocol that reliably induces senescence in murine and human astrocytes. Treated cells showed nuclear enlargement, reduced proliferation (BrdU), and increased markers of senescence (p21, β‐galactosidase), DNA

DOES VIOLENCE REDUCE INVESTMENT IN EDUCATION?: A THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL APPROACH [PDF]

open access: yes
The paper develops a dynamic theoretical model and presents empirical evidence about the relationship between violence and education investments. Although some papers have estimated regressions to link educational outcomes and violence, no formal models ...

Cognitive brain lateralization through neurovascular coupling in healthy subjects: A statistical complexity analysis

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 15, August 2025.
Abstract Human sensory, cognitive, and motor processes often result in asymmetric cerebral hemisphere activation, observable through neurovascular coupling (NVC). Brain lateralization enables simultaneous performance of distinct functions, enhancing cognitive capacity.
