Hackerspaces and engineering education
2014 IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE) Proceedings, 2014During the past two years, we investigated the Louisville, Kentucky hackerspace as a venue for hosting undergraduate engineering student projects. The projects took place at LVL1.org, a collaborative workshop in downtown Louisville. There are such "makerspaces" or "hackerspaces" in most medium to large-sized US and European cities.

Engineering an education for the future
Computer, 1998Faced with rapid and unremitting change in the disciplines of electrical and computer engineering (ECE), some educators argue that they should deliberately not respond aggressively. Rather, educators should focus on fundamentals that will serve the students well for an entire career.

Developments in Engineering Education and Engineering Education Research in Europe
2015Europe is the cradle of engineering, as we know it. Engineering education research started in Europe in the 1960s. At that time, it was mostly social scientists who were conducting educational research. As a result of the weak link to educational practice, the research task was taken away from many educational centres in higher education.

Engineering education in Japan
IEEE Communications Magazine, 1992The Japanese and American post-World-War-II educational systems are compared. The basic concepts and social customs inherent in the two educational systems are discussed. Various problems with the Japanese engineering education system are outlined, and the theory and practical implementation of meta-engineering concepts are described. >

Humanities in Engineering Education
2012The difficulty in defining who the engineer is, in our times, is due to the increasing complexity of technical progress, which seems endless. The engineer’s professionalism nowadays requires not only technical skills, but also a deep sense of responsibility towards human society and the environment.

Software engineering education
Proceedings of the May 19-22, 1980, national computer conference on - AFIPS '80, 1980Several studies have indicated that the data processing industry's most critical problem during the 1980's will be a shortage of qualified software engineers. This panel brings together a number of people who have been actively addressing the problem of increasing the supply of qualified software engineers through both University and industry programs ...

Cloud Engineering in Education
2016 IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering Workshop (IC2EW), 2016As cloud engineering researchers and lecturers, we are frequently confronted with the challenge of teaching advanced concepts to students that are absolute beginners in that area. We believe that teaching complex engineering concepts, e.g., tradeoffs in distributed storage systems, has the highest probability of learning success if done through hands ...
