Estimating Effective Degrees of Freedom in Motor Systems

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2008
Studies of the degrees of freedom and "synergies" in musculoskeletal systems rely critically on algorithms to estimate the "dimension" of kinematic or neural data. Linear algorithms such as principal component analysis (PCA) are the most popular. However, many biological data (or realistic experimental data) may be better represented by nonlinear sets ...

EFFECTS OF DEGREE CORRELATION ON THE SYNCHRONIZATION OF NETWORKS OF OSCILLATORS

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2007
In this paper, we investigate the effects of degree correlation on the synchronization of networks of coupled identical nonlinear oscillators. Firstly, it is shown both numerically and theoretically that synchronizability is enhanced when the network topology exhibits negative degree correlation.

Effective embeddings into strong degree structures

Mathematical Logic Quarterly, 2003
AbstractWe show that any partial order with a Σ3 enumeration can be effectively embedded into any partial order obtained by imposing a strong reducibility such as ≤tt on the c. e. sets. As a consequence, we obtain that the partial orders that result from imposing a strong reducibility on the sets in a level of the Ershov hiearchy below ω + 1 are co ...

Effectively retractable theories and degrees of undecidability

The Journal of Symbolic Logic, 1970
In this paper a new property of theories, called effective retractability is introduced and used to obtain a characterization for the degrees of subtheories of arithmetic and set theory. By theory we understand theory in standard formalization as defined by Tarski [10].

Effective Degree of Mydriasis with Phenylephrine and Tropicamide

American journal of optometry and physiological optic, 1976
ABSTRACT The mydriatic effects of several concentrations of phenylephrine and of tropicamide were studied in 84 young adults for 90 min following topical instillation. Pupillary diameter was estimated (a) under ambient photopic illumination and (b) when illumination was increased to that associated with direct ophthalmoscopy ...

Effective Concept Classes of PAC and PACi Incomparable Degrees, Joins and Embedding of Degrees

The Bulletin of Symbolic Logic, 2023
AbstractThe Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning is a machine learning model introduced by Leslie Valiant in 1984. The PACi reducibility refers to the PAC reducibility independent of size and computation time. This reducibility in PAC learning resembles the reducibility in Turing computability.

Effects of Degree of Visual Association and Angle of Displacement on the “Ventriloquism” Effect

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1973
The “ventriloquism”, effect refers to the perception of speech sounds as coming from the same direction as the visually observed speaker (even though they are not actually coming from the same direction). Our experiments provide further proof that a necessary condition for this effect is that there be an association between certain critical visual ...

Selection Bias and the Degree Effect

The Journal of Human Resources, 1993
This paper evaluates the evidence for a college degree effect-a particularly high return to completing college compared to the first three years-in the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS-72). An ordered probit model of schooling choice is developed to correct for selection bias.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ENGINEERING DEGREE COURSES

Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 1988
ABSTRACT Statements from the engineering institutions and educational authorities agree that, in higher education, the acquisition of specific knowledge and technical proficiency must go hand in hand with the stimulation of inquiry and the encouragement of independent judgement and critical appraisal.
