Powerful yet challenging: mechanistic niche models for predicting invasive species potential distribution under climate change

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Risk assessments of invasive species present one of the most challenging applications of species distribution models (SDMs) due to the fundamental issues of distributional disequilibrium, niche changes, and truncation. Invasive species often occupy only a fraction of their potential environmental and geographic ranges, as their spatiotemporal dynamics ...

Aggregate Cloud Particle Effects in Exoplanet Atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Aerosol opacity has emerged as a critical factor controlling transmission and emission spectra. We provide a simple guideline for the effects of aerosol morphology on opacity and residence time in the atmosphere, as it pertains to transit observations, particularly those with flat spectra due to high altitude aerosols.

Obstacle-aware Adaptive Informative Path Planning for UAV-based Target Search

open access: yes, 2019
Target search with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is relevant problem to many scenarios, e.g., search and rescue (SaR). However, a key challenge is planning paths for maximal search efficiency given flight time constraints.

The time of acquisition of multispectral predictors matters: the role of seasonality in bird species distribution models

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Species distribution models (SDMs) analyse the relationships between species occurrences and environmental predictors. Their efficacy largely depends on the selection of ecologically relevant predictors, with remote sensing (RS) data being one of the most commonly used sources. The usability of multispectral predictors is influenced by temporal changes

A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Residential Heating Systems in Tehran, Iran

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Environmental pollution from different gas heating systems in residential buildings has significant impacts, especially in urban areas due to their high density. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment of two commonly used residential heating systems in Tehran: the Central Boiler Room (CBR) and the wall‐hung boiler (WHB). Using

On The Circular Altitude of Graphs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Peter Cameron introduced the concept of the circular altitude of graphs; a parameter which was shown by Bamberg et al. that provides a lower bound on the circular chromatic number. In this note, we investigate this parameter and show that the circular altitude of a graph is equal to the maximum of circular altitudes of its blocks.

Decentralized Wind Energy Systems as Catalysts for Urban Resilience: A Design Framework

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Confronting the escalating extreme weather events (EWEs) and intensifying winds, this study proposes an active response to these issues by exploring decentralized wind energy production for Peng Chau Island, Hong Kong. It integrates theoretical perspectives on energy democracy—empowering local communities through energy autonomy—and urban ...

Statistical Modeling for Wind-Temperature Meteorological Elements in Troposphere [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
A comprehensive statistical model for vertical profiles of the horizontal wind and temperature throughout the troposphere is presented. The model is based on radiosonde measurements of wind and temperature during several years. The profiles measured under quite different atmospheric conditions exhibit qualitative similarity, and a proper choice of the ...
