Protected area coverage of vulnerable regions to conserve functional diversity of birds
Abstract Global‐change drivers are increasing the rates of species extinction worldwide, posing a serious threat to ecosystem functioning. Preserving the functional diversity of species is currently a priority to mitigate abrupt biodiversity loss in the coming decades.

Genetic diversity and IUCN Red List status
Abstract The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List is an important and widely used tool for conservation assessment. The IUCN uses information about a species’ range, population size, habitat quality and fragmentation levels, and trends in abundance to assess extinction risk.

Enzymatic recycling of polyethylene terephthalate through the lens of proprietary processes
Because society is doing significant efforts to recycle plastics, one option is to break them down into monomers with the help of specialized enzymes. Polyesters such as PLA (polylactic), PCL (polycaprolactone), PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates) and PET (polyethylene‐terephthalate) have been considered in more detail for these biological treatments, because

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Natural selection is the major force driving adaptive evolution in natural populations, varying in strength, direction, and form through space and time, especially in highly variable environments such as Mediterranean ecosystems.

The effect of flight efficiency on gap‐crossing ability in Amazonian forest birds
We determined the role of flight efficiency on the likelihood of crossing a road that bisected an Amazonian forest. We found that flight efficiency was a strong predictor of road‐crossing probability: species with high hand‐wing indices (more elongated wings) crossed the road more frequently than those with low hand‐wing indices.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are renewable and biodegradable polymers produced by bacteria, providing an alternative to oil‐derived plastics. Pseudomonas putida is a platform organism for PHA bioproduction and biodegradation. This review provides an overview of metabolic and regulatory circuits that rule PHA accumulation in P.
