An outline is given of the varied uses and meanings attributed to the term "ego ideal" in the current literature. The concept is clarified and defined, with special attention to its historical origins. The locus of the ego ideal is placed in the superego, and its structure and function are integrated with those of the superego.

Freud intentionally used Das Ich to refer to both the "self" and an abstract metapsychological system. In English, the separation of the terms "self" and "ego" has led to major problems. The word self, taken in its everyday sense, is necessarily ubiquitous in psychoanalysis.

The usual method pursued by older schools of child-psychology in treating the problem of the ego was to enquire for the earliest conscious perception of the ego and to take as sign of this the first appearance of the right use of words referring to self. The most direct and uninterrupted manifestation of the ego-aim is self-affirmation.
