Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease that affects both humans and animals. The few existing reports on ehrlichiosis in Brazilian cats have been based on observation of morulae in leukocytes and, more recently, on molecular detection of Ehrlichia sp.

Ehrlichia minasensis, a novel species of Ehrlichia that is closely related to E. canis, is known to infect cattle and deer in Canada. This rickettsial bacterium was isolated from Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus ticks and from dairy and beef cattle in southeast and midwestern Brazil, respectively.

Ehrlichia minasensis sp. nov., isolated from the tick Rhipicephalus microplus
Recently, we obtained a rickettsial isolate (Ehrlichia sp. UFMG-EVT) from the haemolymph of engorged Rhipicephalus microplus tick females. On the basis of maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene, groEL, dsb, gltA and trp36 sequences we showed that Ehrlichia sp. UFMG-EVT belongs to the α-Proteobacteria, family Anaplasmataceae, genus

NATURAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INFECTION OF WHITE-TAILED DEER (ODOCOILEUS VIRGINIANUS) FROM THE UNITED STATES WITH AN EHRLICHIA SP. CLOSELY RELATED TO EHRLICHIA RUMINANTIUM [PDF]
An Ehrlichia sp. (Panola Mountain [PM] Ehrlichia sp.) closely related to Ehrlichia ruminantium was recently detected in a domestic goat experimentally infested with lone star ticks (LSTs, Amblyomma americanum) collected from Georgia, USA. The infected goat exhibited pyrexia and mild clinical pathologic abnormalities consistent with ehrlichiosis.

In vitroCulture of a Novel Genotype ofEhrlichiasp. from Brazil [PDF]
Ehrlichiae are obligate intracytoplasmic Gram-negative, tick-borne bacteria belonging to the Anaplasmataceae family. Ehrlichioses are considered emerging diseases in both humans and animals. Several members of the genus Ehrlichia have been isolated and propagated in vitro.
