Spatial Variability in Year‐to‐Year, Near‐Bottom Hypoxia Over the United States Pacific Northwest Continental Shelf

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract The continental shelf off the northwest coast of North America experiences seasonal upwelling driven by summertime southward winds. Nutrient‐rich, low‐oxygen water is upwelled onto the shelf from a depth of about 150 m seaward of the continental shelfbreak.

Genetic and Iterative Metaheuristics‐Informed Algorithms for Precision Shallow Groundwater Modeling and Drought Inference

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Cokriging is a widely used geostatistical method for modeling the shallow groundwater table, often incorporating digital elevation models (DEMs) as secondary variables. However, existing approaches rarely include robust validation procedures to reduce local uncertainty or iteratively improve spatial predictions.

DeepRec: Global Terrestrial Water Storage Reconstruction Since 1941 Using Spatiotemporal‐Aware Deep Learning Model

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Terrestrial water storage (TWS) plays an important role in describing the Earth system, as water availability is decisive for ecosystems and human development. Since 2002, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its Follow‐On (GRACE‐FO) mission have measured TWS anomalies with unprecedented accuracy, enabling a leap in ...

A Generalized Data‐Driven Shoreline Model at the Regional Scale

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Shoreline models underpin long‐term coastal planning and hazard mitigation but are often limited by site‐specific calibration and simplified process representations. While machine learning (ML) approaches have recently matched or exceeded the skill of traditional models in deterministic shoreline forecasting, they have yet to demonstrate ...
