High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Ramifications of Structural Deformations on Collapse Loads of Critically Cracked Pipe Bends Under In-Plane Bending and Internal Pressure

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2017
Finite-element analysis based on elastic–perfectly plastic material was conducted to examine the influence of structural deformations on collapse loads of circumferential through-wall critically cracked 90° pipe bends undergoing in-plane closing bending ...

Vortex-type elastic structured media and dynamic shielding

open access: yes, 2012
The paper addresses a novel model of metamaterial structure. A system of spinners has been embedded into a two-dimensional periodic lattice system. The equations of motion of spinners are used to derive the expression for the chiral term in the equations

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

A Computational Framework for Load-Constrained Human Squat Motion with Nonlinear Joint Modeling

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Human squat motion is commonly analyzed using inverse dynamics, where joint moments are computed from experimentally measured kinematics. Such analyses typically assume that the observed motion is mechanically feasible and do not explicitly account for ...

Magnetism in S=1/2 Double-Perovskites with Strong Spin-Orbit Interactions

open access: yes, 2014
We study magnetism on the fcc lattice with tetragonal distortions, with general exotic directional magnetic interactions allowed by symmetry. We consider two models, corresponding to a uniform tetragonal distortion, or a two-sublattice model with a ...

Enhanced Strength and Corrosion Resistance of Ti‐13Nb‐12Ta‐10Zr‐4Sn Alloy by Aging Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work systematically investigates the effect of aging treatment on mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of vacuum arc‐melted Ti‐13Nb‐12Ta‐10Zr‐4Sn alloy. Owing to the increased α″ martensite, strength and corrosion resistance were significantly enhanced by aging treatment.

Magnetic Properties of a Pressure-induced Superconductor UGe$_2$

open access: yes, 2001
We performed the DC-magnetization and neutron scattering experiments under pressure {\it P} for a pressure-induced superconductor UGe$_2$. We found that the magnetic moment is enhanced at a characteristic temperature {\it T}$^{*}$ in the ferromagnetic ...

Copper Nanocrystallization in Anodic Oxide Films of Ti–Cu‐Based Bulk Metallic Glass and Its Effect on the Corrosion Resistance and Cytocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Viktoriia Shtefan, Thorgund Nemec, Ute Hempel, Annett Gebert and coworkers demonstrate that anodic treatment of Ti–Cu‐based metallic glass in a nontoxic pyrophosphate electrolyte forms a protective bilayered Ti/Zr‐oxide film enriched with Cu nanocrystals.

On the Influence of Modulus of Subgrade Reaction and the Wavelength of Corrugation on Bifurcation of Thin Corrugated Shell Lying on Elastic Foundation under Action of Hydrostatic Pressure

open access: yesМеханика машин, механизмов и материалов, 2009
The problem of buckling of a thin corrugated shell lying on elastic foundation under action of the non-uniform hydrostatic pressure is considered.
