Wave Propagation in an Elastic Beam or Plate on an Elastic Foundation

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1962
Presented is an analysis of wave propagation in an infinite elastic plate or beam on an elastic foundation, based on a comparison of frequency spectra (or wave-train solutions) from the exact equations and existing approximate bending theories. A distinct similarity is found between the spectrum representing the more exact theory of bending and the ...

Beams on Variable Winkler Elastic Foundation

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1986
A stiffness approach is presented for computing the solution of beams on variable Winkler foundation. The solution may be achieved using only a small number of elements along the beam. Accuracy is dependent only on a preset user criterion. A numerical example demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the procedure.

Beams on Elastic Foundations

2010
Many engineering applications involve a relatively rigid structure supported by a more flexible distributed ‘foundation’. An important class of examples arises in civil engineering, where buildings or other structures are supported on a soil base. Other less obvious examples include steel components supported on extended rubber bushings, floating ...

Nonlinear Dynamics of a Beam on Elastic Foundation

Nonlinear Dynamics, 1997
The nonlinear dynamics of a simply supported beam resting on a nonlinear spring bed with cubic stiffness is analyzed. The continuous differential operator describing the mathematical model of the system is discretized through the classical Galerkin procedure, and its nonlinear dynamic behavior is investgated using the method of normal forms.

Beams and plates on elastic foundations: a review

Progress in Structural Engineering and Materials, 2005
AbstractThe interaction action between structures and supporting soil media is of fundamental importance in foundation design and it has always attracted the attention of both researchers and engineers. This paper reviews the state‐of‐the‐art in this field, highlighting the key areas of development, including the modelling of the soil media and various

Beams on Elastic Foundation

1995
In this chapter a numerical method for the solution of the problem of a beam on an elastic foundation is presented. Special care will be taken that the program can be used for beams consisting of sections of unequal length, as the program is to be used as a basis for a sheet pile wall program, and for a program for a laterally loaded pile in a layered ...

Bending of an Infinite Beam on an Elastic Foundation

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1937
Abstract The elementary theory of the bending of a beam on an elastic foundation is based on the assumption that the beam is resting on a continuously distributed set of springs the stiffness of which is defined by a “modulus of the foundation” k. Very seldom, however, does it happen that the foundation is actually constituted this way.

Elastic behavior of ring-on-foundation

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 2012
Abstract Motivated by a practical flexible crashworthy structure that protects the bridge pile against ship collision, elastic behavior of a closed circular beam (i.e., a circular ring) attached to an elastic foundation (R-o-F, in short) is analyzed.
