Aspects of cauchy elastic materials

International Journal of Engineering Science, 1980
Abstract The Darboux theorem on the classification and canonical forms of first degree exterior differential forms is used to obtain a canonical representation of Cauehy elastic materials. It is shown that the balance of moment of momentum and the principle of material indifference are independent for materials whose Darboux class is greater than 1 ...

Dislocations in visco-elastic materials

Philosophical Magazine, 1961
Abstract An expression is found for the force required to move a dislocation steadily through a visco elastic medium, in particular Zener's standard linear solid. It is applied to the case of a screw dislocation in iron exhibiting the Snoek effect. Sohoeok and Soeger'e atomic treatment of the same problem contains an error.

Magnetizable and Polarizable Elastic Materials

Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2007
In research on materials, it is not unusual for workers to be unaware of good ideas and results produced long ago, and I will discuss a case in point. When workers became acquainted with radiation pressure, it stimulated them to consider the possibility that electromagnetic fields could not only exert forces on matter, but that matter could exert ...

Origins of elasticity in molecular materials

Nature Materials
Elasticity is ubiquitous and produces a spontaneously reversible response to applied stress1. Despite the utility and importance of this property in regard to scientific and engineering applications, the atomic-scale location of the force that returns an object to its original shape remains elusive in molecular crystals. Here we use a series of density

NONLINEAR ELASTICITY AND THERMODYNAMICS OF GRANULAR MATERIALS

Advances in Complex Systems, 2001
The elastic properties of granular materials can be enormously nonlinear as compared with the properties of non-porous materials. Experiments on isotropic compression of a granular assembly of spheres show that the shear μ, and bulk k, moduli vary with the confining pressure faster than the 1/3 power law predicted by Hertz–Mindlin elasticity theory ...

The Elastic Moduli of Heterogeneous Materials

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1962
Bounds and expressions for the elastic moduli of two or many phase nonhomogeneous materials are obtained by an approximate method based on the variational theorems of the theory of elasticity and on a concentric-spheres model. Theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental results for a two-phase alloy.
