Elastic Tissue Histochemistry

1977
The object of our project has been to isolate, purify and characterize elastin from normal, fetal and pathological tissues and to relate the chemical findings to the morphological description of the tissue. Verhoeff’s iron haematoxylin technique (1) was adopted as the standard stain as it has reliably given a good differentiation between elastin and ...

Tissue motion and elasticity imaging

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2000
The idea of using soft tissue mechanical properties to diagnose disease occurred to ancient Greek physicians more than 2000 years ago. Hippocrates and colleagues reportedly invented manual palpation as a means for detecting occult breast tumours before the advanced phase of this disease negated the effectiveness of surgical treatment.

Elastic modulus of hard tissues

Journal of Biomechanics, 2012
This work aims at evaluating the elastic modulus of hard biological tissues by considering their staggered platelet micro-structure. An analytical expression for the effective modulus along the stagger direction is formulated using three non-dimensional structural variables. Structures with a single staggered hierarchy (e.g.

Elastic Tissue in Fibroepithelial Polyps

The American Journal of Dermatopathology, 1999
Fibroepithelial polyps are common cutaneous lesions with an unknown etiology. We attempted to demonstrate that fibroepithelial polyps develop secondary to a focal loss of elastic tissue. Forty-five fibroepithelial polyps were examined. All were stained with Verhoeff-van Gieson stain for elastic tissue and examined.

The elastic reconstruction of soft tissues

Proceedings IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, 2003
A finite element based nonlinear inverse scheme is presented to reconstruct the elastic properties of soft tissues subjected to an external compression. An objective function relating the least-square difference of model-predicted and measured displacement or strain fields from a sequence of images (B-mode or MRI) is minimized with respect to the ...

Cutaneous Elastic Tissue Anomalies

The American Journal of Dermatopathology, 2019
Abstract:After a review of the physiology in the formation and degradation of cutaneous elastic tissue, we describe the clinicopathologic disorders characterized by increased and decreased cutaneous elastic tissue. Cutaneous disorders characterized by increased and/or abnormal elastic tissue in the dermis include elastoma, also named nevus elasticus ...

Elastic tissue in scars and alopecia

Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, 2000
A recent report suggests that elastic fibers appear in scars in a time‐dependent fashion. This observation prompted our investigation, because we have found elastic tissue stains helpful in determining the pattern of scarring in cases of permanent alopecia.

On the imperfect elasticity of lung tissue

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1989
This paper deals with a unifying hypothesis addressed at lung tissue resistance and its responses to neurohumoral and biophysical stimuli. The hypothesis holds that dissipative and elastic processes within lung tissue are coupled at the level of the stress-bearing element.

Estimation of tissue elasticity of the lung

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1964
Theoretical work-volume curves for liquid-filled lungs were constructed based on an assumed geometric form and deformation of the terminal air spaces and on the characteristics of single fibers of elastic tissue. These curves were compared with those measured in rats and with one taken from the journal literature in the case of a human lung.

Elastic tissues of the intervertebral disc

Biochemical Society Transactions, 2002
Elastic fibres have been generally considered to play no significant role in the mechanical functioning of the intervertebral disc since earlier studies reported that the elastic fibre network was sparse and irregular. However, a recent study has reported that the network is highly organized and that the distribution and orientation of elastic fibres ...
