Domain boundary engineering [PDF]

open access: yes
We review the idea that domain boundaries, rather than domains, can carry information and act as memory devices. Domains are bulk objects; their large response to changing external fields is related to their change in volume, which implies the movement ...

Bulk‐Like Spin Cycloid and Fast Switching in Freestanding BiFeO3

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Freestanding BiFeO3 membranes overcome substrate‐induced constraints by simultaneously restoring the intrinsic bulk‐like spin cycloid and enabling ≈50% faster ferroelectric switching than substrate‐clamped epitaxial thin films. This combination of robust noncollinear antiferromagnetic order and efficient electric‐field switching establishes ...

Effect of elastic walls on suspension flow

open access: yes, 2019
We study suspensions of rigid particles in a plane Couette flow with deformable elastic walls. We find that, in the limit of vanishing inertia, the elastic walls induce shear thinning of the suspension flow such that the effective viscosity decreases as ...

Influence of wall elasticity on growth and collapse of bubbles near a wall

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology
The growth and collapse of a laser-induced bubble near an agarose gel were observed with a high-speed video camera in which 0.7% (Young's modulus E = 13 kPa), 1.5% (E = 55 kPa), 3.0% (E = 200 kPa), and 5.0% (E = 570 kPa) agarose gels were used as tissue-mimicking phantoms. The effects of Young's modulus of agarose and the dimensionless bubble-

Thermoresponsive Liquid Crystalline Polymer Coatings Programmed by Field‐Induced Topological Defects for Tunable Optical and Topographical Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Resonant standing waves generate large‐area lattices of liquid‐crystal topological defects that are permanently encoded into polymer coatings by photopolymerization. The preserved director architecture produces thermally reconfigurable surface topographies while maintaining programmable optical functionality, demonstrating a scalable strategy for ...

Microscale Patterning of Ultrahigh‐Viscosity Metallic‐Polymer Composites via Embedded Droplet Writing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid additive manufacturing platform integrates direct droplet writing of metallic composite with VAT photopolymerization to fabricate architected soft magnetic composites. This approach enables microscale patterning of high‐viscosity materials for programmable actuators, adaptive fluidic devices, and switchable adhesives, offering tunable ...

Effects of diaphragm flexibility on seismic response of asymmetric-plan buildings

open access: yesGrađevinar, 2018
The effects of diaphragm flexibility on seismic response of asymmetric-plan buildings are investigated in this paper. The results show that the diaphragm flexibility could induce different effects depending on the asymmetric system characteristics ...

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

Enhanced Ferroelectric Phase Formation via Local Structure Modification in the Pre‐Crystalline State of Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hafnium zirconium oxide thin films are grown using plasma‐enhanced atomic layer deposition with the addition of an atomic layer annealing (ALA) step. ALA leads to a change in the short‐range structure of the deposit and encourages formation of the ferroelectric Pca21 phase. The result is wake‐up‐free performance with films exposed to ALA.
