Elastic Coupling between Nonferroelastic Domain Walls
We reveal a strong elastic interaction between nonferroelastic domain walls in ferroelectric thin films. This interaction, having no analogue in bulk materials, is governed by elastic fields that are associated with the domain walls and extends to distances comparable to the film thickness.

Elastic characteristics of the airway wall
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1989To examine the elastic behavior of the upper airway, we obtained pressure-area plots from data gathered from acoustic images of the airway and measurements of mouth pressure during tidal breathing in 10 adult human volunteers (dA/dP). These plots revealed both tidal hysteresis and a change in slope as a function of distance along the airway. The slope

Elastic fibers in the anterior abdominal wall
Hernia, 2011The aim of this study was to substantiate the hypothesis as to whether an altered amount of elastic fibers in the linea alba aponeurosis occurs or not in anterior abdominal wall hernias (epigastric, incisional and umbilical), comparing the findings with those of a control group of cadavers without hernias.Thirty patients (15 males and 15 females) with ...

Elastic Nature of the Lacrimal Canalicular Wall
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2014To examine the elastic nature of the lacrimal canalicular wall.Fifteen postmortem specimens of 11 Japanese individuals (8 right, 7 left; age range, 45-89 years at death) fixed in 10% buffered formalin were axially sliced parallel to the lower eyelid margin to include all 3 portions of the lacrimal canaliculi (intrasac, extrasac-extramuscular, and ...

Abdominal wall elasticity of children during pneumoperitoneum
Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2020Laparoscopic surgery in children is often hampered by limited working space. This is partially compensated by stretching the child's abdominal wall. The volume of space that can be gained and changes to abdominal wall elasticity with respect to age are unknown.

Modeling elastic properties of microtubule tips and walls
European Biophysics Journal, 1998Electron micrographs of tips of growing and shrinking microtubules are analyzed and interpreted. The many shapes observed are all consistent with a simple mechanical model, a flexible tube with competing intrinsic curvatures. Observations are also consistent with growing and shrinking microtubules having the same intrinsic curvature for protofilaments,

Proportionality between chest wall resistance and elastance
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1991Fredberg and Stamenovic (J. Appl. Physiol. 67: 2408-2419, 1989) demonstrated a relatively robust phenomenological relationship between resistance (R) and elastance (E) of lung tissue during external forcing. The relationship can be expressed as omega R = eta E, where omega = 2 pi times forcing frequency and eta is hysteresivity; they found eta to be ...

Elastic deformation of thick-walled cylinders
2022Abstract This chapter presents a detailed solution to the technologically important problem of an isotropic elastic thick-walled cylinder subjected to internal and external pressure. The solution is presented in cylindrical coordinates, and thus the chapter also introduces the concepts of the components of strain, the strain-displacement

Elasticity of the living abdominal wall in laparoscopic surgery
Journal of Biomechanics, 2006Laparoscopic surgery requires inflation of the abdominal cavity and this offers a unique opportunity to measure the mechanical properties of the living abdominal wall. We used a motion analysis system to study the abdominal wall motion of 18 patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery, and found that the mean Young's modulus was 27.7+/-4.5 and 21.0+/-3.7 ...
