Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Air-Lubricated Rollers

Journal of Tribology, 1996
Abstract The lubricating air film between two rotating rollers in close contact was studied numerically. The numerical model used in this study accounts for the effects of air compressibility, material deformation, and the slip flow which occurs when the air film thickness is not much larger than the mean-free-path of the air molecules ...

Sectional Micro-Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Journal of Tribology, 1993
A method has been introduced to solve micro-EHL problems, with the discontinuous pressure distribution caused by high surface roughnesses. Treatments of inner boundary conditions, flow continuity, and deformation compatibility are given in detail. Examples of different sectional micro-EHL problems show that the method is efficient.

Parched Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Journal of Tribology, 1985
A parched subregime of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is proposed, lying between starved and mixed. Parched EHL is necessary to describe instrument ball bearing behavior, for example: long term transients in film thickness. A parched bearing has the least driving torque demand and best spin axis definition possible from any lubrication regime.

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication: A lubricant industry perspective

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 1999
The twin challenges facing the automotive and lubricants industries as we approach the millennium are: how to reduce the levels of gaseous emissions and how to achieve increased durability. Improved durability is necessary in order to maintain low levels of emissions. The lubricant has an important part to play in both the improvement in durability by

Regimes of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 1970
The different regimes of behaviour in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of rollers are displayed on a chart whose rectangular co-ordinates express the influence of elasticity of the solids and variation of viscosity of the lubricant with pressure respectively. At small values of these co-ordinates, i.e.

Nanometer Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

1997
The ultra-thin film optical interferometry technique has extended the exploration of elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication to a regime where film thickness is measured in nanometers. With the gap between the lubricated surfaces corresponding to the width of just a few molecules, investigations are now being made into the validity of classical EHD theory

Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Theory

1993
Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the load capacity of the conventional, liquid-lubricated, journal bearing benefits from the close conformity between two surfaces. Common forms of thrust bearing have films of similar proportions. This is not applicable for gear tooth engagements, cams and followers, and nor for the contact between rolling ...
