Control of steelmaking in the electric arc furnace

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1977
Problems associated with the production of special steels in the electric arc furnace are discussed. The production cycle is segmented into three stages consisting of (i) scrap mix selection and load scheduling, (ii) power input control during the melting cycle, and (iii) refining control.

Power Increase of Steelmaking Electric-Arc Furnace

Metallurgist, 2016
Different schemes for connecting a static thyristor compensator (STC) are examined. Research conducted using a simulation model in the Simulink app of the Matlab mathematical package for the DSP-250 and STK-330 MVAr complexes at the metallurgical enterprise MMK Metalurji (Dortyol, Turkey) is presented.

Universal Electrical Characteristics of Steelmaking Arc Furnaces

Steel in Translation, 2018
A single dependence of the power factor on the arc current is established for all steelmaking arc furnaces. On that basis, universal furnace characteristics may be calculated, determining the functional relationship of the active, reactive, and apparent power with the arc current.

Monitoring the environmental and energy impacts of electric arc furnace steelmaking

Matériaux & Techniques, 2016
The problem of rating the environmental impact of industrial plants has been widely studied in recent years with a specific focus on CO2 emission and energy consumption. On the contrary, only limited attention has been paid to the evaluation of the resource efficiency and overall environmental impact of industrial plants. This paper presents the first

Preheating of HBI for electric arc furnace steelmaking

1998
The increasing use of Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) as a feed stock to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking presents significant challenges to producers in terms of energy usage and productivity. In this context, the University of Wollongong has been studying the use of the hot off gases from EAF's for the preheating of RBI feed to an EAF.

Jet‐liquid interaction in a steelmaking electric arc furnace

Scandinavian Journal of Metallurgy, 2001
The interaction of liquid steel and an inclined impinging oxygen jet in an electric arc furnace is of interest both commercially and scientifically. The bath activity in the EAF may vary from a surface splash ejected to high elevation to intense sub‐surface mixing. The system is appropriately modelled using water and nitrogen with scaled flowrates.

Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking with Sponge Iron

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1979
Abstract The technology of melting sponge iron is presently in an evolutionary state as steelmakers learn how to take best advantage of sponge iron's unique physical and chemical characteristics. Several of sponge iron's effects on electric arc furnace operation are discussed and it is concluded that best use of sponge iron generally results from ...

Organic pollutants from electric arc furnaces in steelmaking: a review

Environmental Chemistry Letters, 2020
The use of electric arc furnaces is important in steelmaking, notably to recycle scrap steel, yet arc furnace is an unintentional source of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as chlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and brominated dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs).
