Defect model for the dependence of breakdown rate on external electric fields

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2012
We develop an analytical model for the vacuum electric breakdown rate dependence on an external electric field, observed in test components for the compact linear collider concept.

Thermal and electric field driven breakdown precursor formation on metal surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The phenomenon of electric breakdown poses serious challenge to the design of devices that operate under high gradient environments. Experimental evidence often points towards breakdown events that are accompanied by elevated temperatures and dark current spikes, presumably due to high-asperity nano-structure formation that enhances the local electric ...

Electrical Breakdown in a V2O3 device at the Insulator to Metal Transition [PDF]

open access: yesEPL 101 57003 2013, 2012
We have measured the electrical properties of a V2O3 thin film micro bridge at the insulator metal transition (IMT). Discontinuous jumps to lower voltages in the current voltage characteristic (IV) followed by an approximately constant voltage progression for high currents indicate an electrical breakdown of the device.

Laser-assisted guiding of electric discharges around objects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Electric breakdown in air occurs for electric fields exceeding 34 kV/cm and results in a large current surge that propagates along unpredictable trajectories.

Impulse Breakdown Characteristics of Main Gap in the Presence of a Local Discharge

open access: yesJournal of Applied Science & Process Engineering, 2019
The characteristics of impulse breakdown voltages and the influence of the position of third electrode in air gap are investigated experimentally to study the parameters influencing the breakdown voltage in the presence of metallic objects around the ...

Influence of Cooling Rate on Primary Silicon Size in Hypereutectic Al–Si Alloy Fabricated by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Al–Si alloys are particularly in demand for automotive and electronic applications, thanks to their excellent wear and thermal properties. Nevertheless, when processed by conventional methods with low cooling rates, the coarse primary Si phases are responsible for increasing brittleness and inducing crack propagation.

Ultra‐Shallow Flat Heat Waves on Low Thermal Conductivity Flexible Polyimide Substrate for Millisecond Thermal Analysis of Materials and Bioelectronic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An electronic system is presented consisting of a silver thin‐film electrode on a polyimide substrate working both as a heating element and a resistive temperature sensor, generating millisecond heat pulses with very fast heating and cooling rates and a flat peak temperature with a tunable duration.

Performance limiting effects in X-band accelerators

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2011
Acceleration gradient is a critical parameter for the design of future TeV-scale linear colliders. The major obstacle to higher gradient in room-temperature accelerators is rf breakdown, which is still a very mysterious phenomenon that depends on the ...

Explosive electric breakdown due to conducting-particle deposition on an insulating substrate.

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2014
We introduce a theoretical model to investigate the electric breakdown of a substrate on which highly conducting particles are adsorbed and desorbed with a probability that depends on the local electric field.

Electrical breakdown phenomena of dielectric elastomers [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2017
Silicone elastomers have been heavily investigated as candidates for dielectric elastomers and are as such almost ideal candidates with their inherent softness and compliance but they suffer from low dielectric permittivity. This shortcoming has been sought optimized by many means during recent years.
