The Remarkable Dr. Abildgaard and Countershock

Annals of Internal Medicine, 1975
In 1775 Peter Christian Abildgaard, a Danish veterinarian and physician, conducted experiments on electrical countershock on animals. He succeeded in first rendering fowl lifeless by an electric shock and then reviving them by a countershock applied to the chest.

Treatment of presumed asystole during pre-hospital cardiac arrest: Superiority of electrical countershock

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine, 1985
Standard drug therapy for asystole during cardiac arrest includes epinephrine, atropine, and calcium chloride (CaCl). Recent studies have shown that ventricular fibrillation (VF) can appear to be asystole when recorded from the chest surface. To determine the efficacy of these drugs and electrical countershock for asystole, a group of 83 adult ...

Effect of Application of Force to Self-Adhesive Defibrillator Pads on Transthoracic Electrical Impedance and Countershock Success

Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1999
To examine the effect of the application of force to self-adhesive defibrillator pads on transthoracic electrical impedance and countershock success.A prospective, randomized, controlled pilot study was carried out in an experimental animal laboratory, involving 32 mixed-breed swine weighing 36.5 to 55.7 kg each.

Effects of electrophysiologic studies resulting in electrical countershock or burst pacing on left ventricular systolic and diastolic function

American Heart Journal, 1988
To determine the acute effects of electrophysiologic study on left ventricular systolic and diastolic function in patients requiring termination of induced tachyarrhythmias by either electrical countershock or burst pacing, we examined 16 patients (11 men and five women), aged 43 to 78 years (mean 58 +/- 13), undergoing programmed electrical ...

TREATMENT OF CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS WITH SYNCHRONIZED ELECTRICAL COUNTERSHOCK.

Canadian Medical Association journal, 1996
Synchronized electrical countershock is an intriguing new method for the treatment of ectopic tachycardias. The authors applied this treatment to 20 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and, in 17 patients, sinus rhythm was restored immediately. An additional four patients with atrial flutter were successfully converted to sinus rhythm.
