Characterization of a Recyclate‐Based MgO‐Steel Composite As‐Sintered Inert Anode Candidate After Exposure to Cryolite Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon‐free inert anodes are essential for decarbonizing aluminum electrolysis. This study investigates a recyclate‐based MgO‐316L steel composite anode tested under galvanostatic Hall–Héroult conditions in cryolite at 1000°C. Microstructural analysis reveals selective MgO fluorination, spinel and oxide layer formation, electrolyte infiltration, and ...

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Quasinormal modes of dilatonic Reissner–Nordström black holes

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2019
We calculate the quasinormal modes of static spherically symmetric dilatonic Reissner–Nordström black holes for general values of the electric charge and of the dilaton coupling constant.

Optimal piezo-electro-mechanical coupling to control plate vibrations

open access: yes, 2010
A new way of coupling electrical and mechanical waves, using piezoelectric effect, is presented here. Since the energy exchange between two systems supporting wave propagation is maximum when their evolution is governed by similar equations, hence, an ...

Inversion of ferrimagnetic magnetization by ferroelectric switching via a novel magnetoelectric coupling

open access: yes, 2016
Although several multiferroic materials/heterostructures have been extensively studied, finding strong magnetoelectric couplings for the electric field control of the magnetization remains challenging.

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Light Induced Hall effect in semiconductors with spin-orbit coupling

open access: yes, 2006
We show that optically excited electrons by a circularly polarized light in a semiconductor with spin-orbit coupling subject to a weak electric field will carry a Hall current transverse to the electric field.

Corrosion and Process Analysis of a Preoxidized MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode in Laboratory‐Scale Na‐Cryolite Molten Salt Electrolysis of Aluminum at 1000°C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
EDX elemental map of the pre‐oxidized MgO–steel cermet anode cross section after electrolysis. The development of inert anodes for aluminum electrolysis remains challenging due to the high corrosivity of cryolite‐based melts at 950°C–1000°C. This study investigates the corrosion and process behavior of a carbon‐free MgO–steel cermet anode derived from ...

Electric-field switching of interlayer magnetic order in a van der waals heterobilayer via spin-electric potential

open access: yesNature Communications
Electric-field control of magnetic order is of significant physical interest and holds great potential for spintronic applications. However, it has rarely been reported in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets, primarily due to the inherently ...
