The goal of this chapter is to describe, concisely, the fundamental mathematical relationships linking sources and the electric potentials and the current fields they produce. These relationships are presented first in the form used when considering current sources in a conducting medium, the form most often of value in bioelectricity.

In electric-field transducers mechanic forces are caused by electric fields or, in the reverse effect, electric polarization is influenced by mechanic forces. Even more than magnetic-field transducers, electric-field transducers exist in a wide variety of forms and shapes.

The electrostatic field E is a vector field which, by equation [2.17], is just the gradient of a scalar field O, the electric potential: $$ \mathbf{E}\,=\,-grad\, $$ .

Optical Absorption in an Electric Field
Physical Review, 1963The effect of an external electric field on the optical absorption associated with a direct transition between bands is studied. Expressions are given for the absorption constant for photon energies below and above the band gap. The formation of discrete levels in the presence of the electric field produces oscillations in the absorption.

ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELD MANAGEMENT
American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal, 1993The emergence of new electrical technologies has produced an extremely complex electric and magnetic field environment in which we must live and work. Although there presently exist no universally accepted human exposure guidelines, current biological research may someday produce such limits. It is in anticipation of these exposure limits that electric
