The basic method of electric field measurement, over a wide frequency range, involves the use of charge induction phenomenon in a body illuminated by the field. As shown in Fig. 4.1 is the electromotive force (emf) eE induced by the electric component of the EMF generated by an arbitrary source in a symmetrical dipole antenna of total length 2h.

Optical measurement of electric fields
SPIE Proceedings, 2003Local electric field strengths in low density plasmas can be measured directly by Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen mostly present in such discharges. This method is based on the Stark-splitting of the atomic resonance lines and causes no significant perturbation to the discharge.

Measurement of electric field distributions
IRE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 1955The usual method of measuring electric field distributions comprises a receiving antenna at the point of observation, connected by means of a transmission line to receiving apparatus at some distant point. The principal advantage of the method described here is that it eliminates the transmission line and thus makes possible many measurements which ...

Electric field measurements in the stratosphere
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1957Abstract The electric field in the atmosphere from ground up to 90.000 ft was measured during a series of twenty balloon flights made in 1955 and 1956. The tests indicate that the electric field in the atmosphere, above the exchange layer, decreases monotonically with height up to the maximum height at which measurements were made.

Measurements of electric fields in thunderclouds
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1974A series of measurements of electric fields inside active thunderclouds in central New Mexico with instrumented rockets shows that very intense fields (up to 4×105 V/m) do exist, although they are rare. In a tabulation of the peak values of the electric field along each trajectory, 4.3×104 V/m is the median value.

Electric Field measurements in air
SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2010, 2010A recent breakthrough in non-contacting electric field measurement at RMIT University may realistically achieve the prospect of low-frequency Electric field measurements in the air. Prototype RMIT Electric, non-contacting chargecoupled (En3c) sensors, while directly-coupled, have a bandwidth limited by audio electronic components to the 20 Hz to 20 kHz

The measurement of electric fields in clouds
Pure and Applied Geophysics, 1965The theory and practice of construction of field mills for static and slowly varying electric fields are discussed. A developed design for a differential field mill suitable for use inside thunderclouds is presented with methods for optimization of the device under usual conditions. This design has been tested both in clouds and in fair weather fields,

Electric field measurement at sea
Oceans '97. MTS/IEEE Conference Proceedings, 2002Most of the electrometers are based on the measurement of the difference of potential between two electrodes; a major drawback of this method is its low performance since little of the signal energy is used. Indeed, a very small current goes through the equipment, limited by the high impedance of the voltmeter.

Electric-field-vector measurement in a glow discharge
Physical Review A, 1985The magnetic quantum number selection rule implies that radiation that is linearly polarized perpendicular to the electric field will not excite ..delta..m = 0 transitions. This phenomenon in Stark spectra has been used to determine the electric field vector in a positive column dc discharge in helium.

Measured distribution of electric field in GTEM-cell
2001 IEEE EMC International Symposium. Symposium Record. International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility (Cat. No.01CH37161), 2002The electric field inside the GTEM-cell [1] was measured with the field probe. The variation of the electric field was within 3 dB. The measured results were compared with the numerical model performed with Finite Element Method (FEM). There is a very good agreement between measured results and the computer model.
