A Role for Electrotonic Coupling Between Cortical Pyramidal Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2019
Many brain regions communicate information through synchronized network activity. Electrical coupling among the dendrites of interneurons in the cortex has been implicated in forming and sustaining such activity in the cortex.

Synchronization in Electrically Coupled Neural Networks

open access: yesComplex Systems, 2006
This report investigates the synchronization of temporal activity in an electrically coupled neural network model. The electrical coupling is established by homotypic static gap-junctions (connexin-43). Two distinct network topologies, namely: sparse random network (SRN) and fully connected network (FCN), are used to establish the connectivity.

Characterization of a Recyclate‐Based MgO‐Steel Composite As‐Sintered Inert Anode Candidate After Exposure to Cryolite Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon‐free inert anodes are essential for decarbonizing aluminum electrolysis. This study investigates a recyclate‐based MgO‐316L steel composite anode tested under galvanostatic Hall–Héroult conditions in cryolite at 1000°C. Microstructural analysis reveals selective MgO fluorination, spinel and oxide layer formation, electrolyte infiltration, and ...

Unidirectional mechanical amplification as a design principle for an active microphone

open access: yes, 2011
Amplification underlies the operation of many biological and engineering systems. Simple electrical, optical, and mechanical amplifiers are reciprocal: the backward coupling of the output to the input equals the forward coupling of the input to the ...

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Exchange Field Induced Magnetoresistance in Colossal Magnetoresistance Manganites

open access: yes, 2000
The effect of an exchange field on electrical transport in thin films of metallic ferromagnetic manganites has been investigated. The exchange field was induced both by direct exchange coupling in a ferromagnet/antiferromagnet multilayer and by indirect ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Reprogramming the Myocardial Infarction Conductive Microenvironment with Superconductive Ionic Patch for Cardiac Function Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Cardiac patches demonstrate promise in the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI). However, their clinical application encounters challenges, particularly electrical coupling instability, impairing myocardial contractility and functional reconstruction.

Taming Explosive Growth through Dynamic Random Links

open access: yes, 2013
We study the dynamics of a collection of nonlinearly coupled limit cycle oscillators, relevant to systems ranging from neuronal populations to electrical circuits, under coupling topologies varying from a regular ring to a random network.

Neurotransmission: Chemical and electrical interneuron coupling [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2000
Recent studies have described the coupling between pairs of neocortical interneurons involving both electrical and chemical transmission; these new results may have important implications for the mechanisms underlying neuronal synchrony and rhythmic activity in the brain.
