Electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves at proton cyclotron harmonics

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2002
Waves with frequencies in the vicinity of the proton cyclotron frequency and its harmonics are commonly observed from the Fast Auroral Snapshot spacecraft when traversing regions of auroral particle acceleration. In areas of upward current, large‐amplitude electromagnetic waves with frequencies within 5% of the local proton gyrofrequency Ωp and its ...

Nonlinear evolution of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves

Physics of Plasmas, 2011
Hybrid Vlasov–Fourier modeling is used to investigate the nonlinear evolution of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves driven by proton temperature anisotropy in plasmas with a population of He+ ions and a cold proton background. In the pure proton–electron plasma, most of the free energy is converted into high-amplitude waves and currents. In the

Response of thermal ions to electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1994
Electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves generated by 10‐50 keV protons in the Earth's equatorial magnetosphere will interact with the ambient low‐energy ions also found in this region. We examine H+ and He+ distribution functions from ≈ 1 to 160 eV using the Hot Plasma Composition Experiment instrument on AMPTE/CCE to investigate the thermal ion response ...

Nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic ion-cyclotron Alfvén waves

The Physics of Fluids, 1985
The nonlinear interaction of an electron-ion plasma with an electromagnetic ion-cyclotron Alfvén wave propagating along an external magnetic field is considered. It is found that the radiation pressure of the electromagnetic wave can excite field-aligned electrostatic density perturbations. Localized wave packets are shown to exist.

Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves in the Magnetosphere

2006
Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are generated in the equatorial region of the plasmasphere-magnetosphere by internal wave-particle interaction with ring current ions. In ground observations they are observed as Pc 1-2 (0.1-5 Hz) waves, and one group of waves exhibits a spectral fine structure that has been classically explained by bouncing ...

Nonresonant interaction of heavy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1985
The motion of a heavy ion in the presence of an intense ultralow‐frequency electromagnetic wave propagating along the dc magnetic field is analyzed. Starting from the basic equations of motion and from their associated two invariants, the heavy ion velocity‐space trajectories are drawn.

Ion cyclotron instability in a strong electromagnetic wave

Physics Letters A, 1968
Abstract The action of a strong electromagnetic wave on a magnetized plasma has been investigated. It has been found that for sufficiently strong external waves ion-acoustic longitudinal oscillations, at a frequency near the ion-cyclotron frequency, may be excited.

Electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves stimulated by modest magnetospheric compressions

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1993
The relationship between sudden impulses and enhancements or onset of Pc 1 at high‐latitude ground stations is well established. It has been proposed that increased hot proton temperature anisotropy resulting from convection during magnetospheric compression is responsible for the enhancement in Pc 1 emissions via generation of electromagnetic ion ...
