Electromagnetic ion beam instabilities: Growth at cyclotron harmonic wave numbers

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1987
The linear theory of electromagnetic ion beam instabilities for arbitrary angles of propagation is studied, with emphasis on the conditions necessary to generate unstable modes at low harmonics of the ion cyclotron resonance condition. The present results extend the analysis of Smith et al. (1985).

Relativistic electron precipitation events driven by electromagnetic ion-cyclotron waves

Physics of Plasmas, 2014
We adopt a canonical approach to describe the stochastic motion of relativistic belt electrons and their scattering into the loss cone by nonlinear EMIC waves. The estimated rate of scattering is sufficient to account for the rate and intensity of bursty electron precipitation.

Laboratory study of velocity shear-driven electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves

2011 XXXth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, 2011
Laboratory observations of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves generated by a localized transverse dc electric field are reported. Experiments indicate that these waves result from a strong E×B flow inhomogeneity in a mildly collisional plasma with sub-critical magnetic field-aligned current.

Nonlinear decay of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in the magnetosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1995
We study the parametric decays of left‐hand polarized electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves, propagating parallel to the external magnetic field, in the magnetosphere. We show that the presence of He + ions and a mixed population of thermal and hot protons give rise to new wave couplings. These couplings lead to a number of new instabilities. Some of the

Generation of Scattered Ion‐Cyclotron Wave and Ion Acoustic Wave by Parametric Instability of Electromagnetic Ion‐Cyclotron Wave in a Dusty Plasma

Contributions to Plasma Physics
ABSTRACT This manuscript provides the theoretical explanation of the nonlinear scattering of an EMIC into an IAW a scattered ion‐cyclotron wave (SICW) in a dusty plasma using fluid theory. The low‐frequency nonlinearity arises through the parallel ponderomotive force on ions and the high‐frequency nonlinearity arises through ...

Anomalous reflection of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves from a plasma

The Physics of Fluids, 1983
It is shown that an electromagnetic ion cyclotron wave can be reflected by a standing density ripple in a plasma flowing along an external magnetic field. An analytical expression for the total plasma reflectance is obtained.
