Electromagnetic Analysis of Superconducting Cables and Joints in Transient Regime

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Appiled Superconductivity, 2004
The paper deals with the electromagnetic analysis of the superconducting multistrand cables used to manufacture magnets for fusion research. An analysis method is described, in which the cable is represented as an equivalent lumped network, whose parameters are automatically computed starting from the cable geometrical data.

FEM analysis of electromagnetic transients in nonlinear networks

European Transactions on Electrical Power, 2008
AbstractThe aim of the paper is to present a numerical procedure based on the finite element method (FEM) in the time domain when modeling electromagnetic transients in a single nonlinear electrical network. It presents an extension to the FE time domain model used to analyze electromagnetic transients in linear networks.

Analysis of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering from Overfilled Cavities

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 2004
This paper aims to develop a solid mathematical technique that is capable of characterizing the electromagnetic scattering of waves by overfilled cavities. In particular, the authors seek to determine the fields scattered by the protruding cavity upon a given incident wave by decomposing the entire infinite solution domain into two subdomains: the ...

Transient analysis of PWM-excited electromagnetic actuators

Proceedings of CEM 2002 - 4th International Conference on Computation in Electromagnetics, 2002
A coupled field-circuit simulation of transients in a nonlinear electromagnetic device supplied by pulse width modulation is presented. In such case, the current and magnetic flux contain periodic components. Therefore the eddy currents and losses in the conducting parts of the core are generated.

Frequency Domain Methods for Electromagnetic Transient Analysis

2007 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting, 2007
Frequency domain methods are invaluable as complements to the time domain ones to analyze electromagnetic transients in power systems. This paper presents an overview of those frequency domain methods most commonly used in this analysis; namely, the Fourier transform, the Laplace transform and the Z-transform.

Electromagnetic transient analysis in EHV power networks

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1982
Following an outline of electromagnetic transients in high-voltage power networks, together with their principal implications in relation to system overvoltages and the switching duty imposed on circuit-breakers, the paper develops a broad review of the now numerous analysis formulations and computer solution methods in this area of applied analysis in

Trends in the frequency domain analysis of electromagnetic transients

2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2009
Multi-rate methods are under development for performing Time-Domain simulation of EMTs in large power systems. It is affirmed in this paper that TD EMT analysis can benefit from complementary analysis in the Frequency Domain. It is proposed, in addition, that an important trend for Frequency Domain EMT analysis is the development of multi-rate methods.

Stability Analysis of Electromagnetic Transient Simulations

2018
We present an analysis of the stability characteristics of the discretized Maxwell-Ampere equations that result from a finite integration of the potential formulation. We demonstrate that the derivation of the discrete versions of these equations will result into unstable formulations unless, in the conversion from a continuous expression to a discrete
