Evidence of austenite memory in PH 15-5 and assessment of its formation mechanism

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2019
Austenite memory and subsequent spontaneous recrystallization during austenitization is stated for some types of soft martensitic stainless steels such as X4CrNiMo16-5-1 or 13Cr5Ni but have not been proposed for the commercial alloy PH15-5 until now ...

Field Report from Collaborative Research Center 1625: Heterogeneous Research Data Management Using Ontology Representations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A unified research data management framework for heterogeneous materials data is presented. The system integrates multimodal datasets using ontologies and knowledge graphs, enabling interoperability and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data principles. By linking data across scales and workflows, it supports reproducible, Artifitial

Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) Analysis of Machinable Lead-Free Brass Alloys: Connecting Texture with Fracture

open access: yesMetals, 2022
The current paper is related to the study of the microstructure and texture of two machinable lead-free brass alloys, namely CuZn42 (CW510L) and CuZn38As (CW511L), which were evaluated in the as-drawn and post heat treated condition. Electron backscatter

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Direct Detection of Electron Backscatter Diffraction Patterns

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2013
We report the first use of direct detection for recording electron backscatter diffraction patterns. We demonstrate the following advantages of direct detection: the resolution in the patterns is such that higher order features are visible; patterns can be recorded at beam energies below those at which conventional detectors usefully operate; high ...

Defining Electron Backscatter Diffraction Resolution [PDF]

open access: yesMicroscopy and Microanalysis, 2005
Automated electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mapping systems have existed for more than 10 years [1,2], and due to their versatility in characterizing multiple aspects of microstructure, they have become an important tool in microscale crystallographic studies. Their increasingly widespread use however raises questions about their accuracy in both

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Electron backscatter diffraction in the silicon nanowires

open access: yesPhysical Sciences and Technology, 2016
In this paper we consider the formation on the surface of silicon by metal-induced chemical etching, the silicon nanowires and the study of their electron (SEM) and (TEM) microscopy, X-ray diffraction (EDX) analysis and electron backscatter diffraction ...

Advances in electron backscatter diffraction

open access: yes, 2019
We present a few recent developments in the field of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). We highlight how open source algorithms and open data formats can be used to rapidly to develop microstructural insight of materials. We include use of AstroEBSD for single pixel based EBSD mapping and conventional orientation mapping; followed by an ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.
