On the Excitation of Polarised Light by Electron Impact [PDF]
Abstract In the course of some experiments on polarisation effects shown by mercury lines, emitted from a low-pressure electron-maintained arc, it was found that the yellow mercury lines λ 5770, 5791 are weakly polarised even in the absence of a magnetic field, the direction of the maximum electric vector being parallel to the ...

Electron Impact Excitation of Extreme Ultra-Violet Transitions in Xe7–Xe10 Ions
In the present work, a detailed study on the electron impact excitation of Xe7+, Xe8+, Xe9+ and Xe10+ ions for the dipole allowed (E1) transitions in the EUV range of 8–19 nm is presented.

Insights into Density and Location Diagnostics of Photoionized Outflows in X-Ray Binaries
The population of metastable levels is key to high-precision density diagnostics of astrophysical plasmas. In photoionized plasmas, density is used to infer the distance from the ionizing source, which is otherwise difficult to obtain.

Electron-impact electronic-state excitation of para-benzoquinone [PDF]
Angle resolved electron energy loss spectra (EELS) for para-benzoquinone (C6H4O2) have been recorded for incident electron energies of 20, 30, and 40 eV. Measured differential cross sections (DCSs) for electronic band features, composed of a combination of energetically unresolved electronic states, are subsequently derived from those EELS.

Electronic excitation of ethanol by low-energy electron impact
We report computed differential cross sections (DCSs) for electron impact excitation of the lower-lying states of both trans and gauche tautomers of ethanol, as well as total cross sections for the 15 eV–50 eV energy range. The Schwinger multichannel (SMC) method with pseudopotentials has been employed, and in our most sophisticated calculation in ...

Ni iv lines can be used as diagnostics for temperature and density for various astrophysical objects. In addition, ionization of Ni2+ is one of the causes of the opacity in the interstellar medium.

Ionospheric electron heating, optical emissions, and striations induced by powerful HF radio waves at high latitudes: Aspect angle dependence [PDF]
In recent years, large electron temperature increases of 300% (3000 K above background) caused by powerful HF-radio wave injection have been observed during nighttime using the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar near Tromsø in northern Norway.

Cross Sections for Electron Scattering from Atomic Tin
The relativistic convergent close-coupling method is applied to calculate cross sections for electron scattering from atomic tin. We present integrated and momentum-transfer cross sections for elastic scattering from the ground and the first four excited

A most general density-matrix formalism is presented to investigate linear polarization of characteristic lines following electron-impact excitation of atoms or ions with arbitrary nuclear spin, which can account for depolarization of energy levels and ...

Electron impact ionization of small molecules at intermediate energies: the molecular R-matrix with pseudostates method [PDF]
A procedure for the ab initio study of electron–molecule collisions at intermediate energies is presented in detail. The molecular R-matrix with pseudostates method is based on the inclusion of discretized continuum states in the close-coupling expansion.
