Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

A scalable, solution‐processed WSe2/ZrO2‐x van der Waals heterostructure realizes a light‐induced field‐tunneling synapse (LIFTS) that activates exclusively under bright illumination, emulating the photopic adaptation of the human retina at the device level.

A dynamically actuated reconfigurable topographical surface (DARTS) integrates contact‐mediated bactericidal nanotopography with programmable mechanical actuation to actively disrupt bacterial biofilms. Dynamic surface reconfiguration enhances bacterial killing and suppresses implant‐associated infections in vivo, providing a new strategy for active ...

Polarity‐matched Zr–MOFs program Nafion's nanoscale morphology during solution casting. Hydrophilic UiO‐66 preserves hydrated pathways, while hydrophobic UiO‐67 increases the proton hopping sites by densifying ionic clusters. Combining both fillers yields a membrane that delivers 176 mS cm−1 conductivity, reaches 1.46 W cm−2 under 200 kPa, and triples ...

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials
Functional carbon materials are synthesized from combination of biopolymer (chitin) and iron precursors. The resultant material exhibits superior surface area and adsorptive properties compared to carbon materials synthesized directly from pure chitin.

The liposome nanoreactor method enables uniform metal nanoparticle synthesis using the interior as a reaction environment. We demonstrate that peptide sequences and lipid compositions act as a functional molecular switch to control reaction environments in liposome nanoreactors.

A field‐driven transition from chiral stripes to an achiral fan state is observed in a tetragonal magnet and linked to a temperature‐dependent rotation of the effective Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction axis. This interplay generates pronounced in‐plane anisotropy and provides a new route for controlling chiral spin textures in noncentrosymmetric ...

Equipment for Electron Irradiations
Radiation Research, 1956to the sample and from the average energy of the electrons. This technique is usable only when there are ample amounts (gram quantities) of material available so that the entire electron beam may be stopped in the sample itself. Pollard and co-workers (3) have irradiated enzymes by allowing an electron beam to pass entirely through the sample; however,

Effects of Electronic Irradiation on Fats
Nature, 1952IRRADIATION with high-velocity electrons has recently been shown to produce changes, apparently of an oxidative nature, in the fatty components of foods1–3, and further investigation of the phenomenon with butter-fat has revealed a number of interesting features. In the experiments we describe, samples 2–3 mm. thick were irradiated in the electron beam

Electron Irradiation of Polythene
Nature, 1954CONSIDERABLE attention has recently been given to the effects of high-energy radiation on polymeric substances1. The effects would appear to be of the same fundamental character whether X-rays, electron bombardment, or the mixed radiations of the atomic pile are used; it is reported that in the absence of oxygen the dominant reactions are either cross ...
