Implicating the red body of Nannochloropsis in forming the recalcitrant cell wall polymer algaenan

open access: yesNature Communications
Stramenopile algae contribute significantly to global primary productivity, and one class, Eustigmatophyceae, is increasingly studied for applications in high-value lipid production.

Phase Stability Study of the Marcasite‐Structure Solid Solutions (Fe,TM)Sb2 (TM = Cr, Ni) Synthesized via Combinatorial Co‐Deposition and Antimonization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase diagrams of transition‐metal di‐pnictides have been efficiently and quickly explored by combinatorial deposition of transition‐metal films and subsequent antimonization enabling the study of compounds with volatile elements. In (Fe,Ni)Sb2 and the (Fe,Cr)Sb2 substitution series, phase separation has been evidenced between class‐A and B marcasites ...

Effect of Water Aging on the Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Carbon/Aramid Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the mechanical properties of Carbon/Aramid intraply hybrid fiber‐reinforced Elium composites under 6 months of water aging. After aging, flexural strength decreases by 25.89%, tensile strength by 4.40%, and fracture toughness by 21.56%.

The effect of a poly-herbal plant extract on the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to tooth enamel

open access: yesBMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies
Background Dental caries, also known as tooth decay or cavity formation, is one of the world’s most widespread dental conditions. It is a plaque-related infection caused mainly by Streptococcus mutans. People have relied on several plant species to treat

A scanning electron microscopy study of the macro-crystalline structure of 2-(2,4-dinitrobenzyl) pyridine [PDF]

open access: yes
The compound, 2-(2,4-dinitrobenzyl) pyridine, was synthesized in the laboratory; an introductory level electron microscopy study of the macro-crystalline structure was conducted using the scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Determination of the Number of Graphene Layers: Discrete Distribution of the Secondary Electron Intensity Derived from Individual Graphene Layers

open access: yes, 2010
Using a scanning electron microscope, we observed a reproducible, discrete distribution of secondary electron intensity stemming from an atomically thick graphene film on a thick insulating substrate.

Spectral Interferometry with Electron Microscopes [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
AbstractInterference patterns are not only a defining characteristic of waves, but also have several applications; characterization of coherent processes and holography. Spatial holography with electron waves, has paved the way towards space-resolved characterization of magnetic domains and electrostatic potentials with angstrom spatial resolution ...

X‐Ray Computed Tomography Quantifies Primary Phases and Reveals Crack Morphology in High‐Cycle Fatigue of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Primary phases and a fatigue crack are studied in a forged blank of an aluminum alloy using synchrotron and laboratory X‐ray computed tomography. To image the crack, the fatigue test is interrupted, and a static tensile load is applied to open the crack.
