Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Shigella sonnei among Men Who Have Sex with Men, Canada, 2010

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011
In 2010, we observed isolates with matching pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns from 13 cases of ciprofloxacin-resistant Shigella sonnei in Montréal. We report on the emergence of this resistance type and a study of resistance mechanisms.

Expression, Purification, and Microscopy‐Based Assays for Engineered Recombinant Tyrosinated, Detyrosinated, and Δ2 Human Tubulin

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Microtubules are noncovalent polymers assembled from α/β tubulin dimers. Their structure, dynamics and interaction with effectors are regulated through the expression of diverse tubulin isotypes and chemically diverse posttranslational modifications, also known as the “tubulin code.” Understanding the biophysical correlates between tubulin ...

Technical improvement in DNA preparation in pulsed-field gel electrophoresis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We report a rapid pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) protocol for subtyping Salmonella isolates. Modifications were made to reduce the number of steps and duration of proteolysis in our original protocol for the preparation of intact, genomic DNA ...

Harnessing Thin‐Film Solid‐State Electrolytes: Enabling Breakthroughs in All‐Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration highlighting the advantages of transitioning from traditional thick solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) to thin‐film SSEs. Thinning the electrolyte enables higher ionic conductivity, reduced interfacial polarization, improved flexibility, compact electrode contact, and enhanced energy density, offering a promising pathway toward high‐

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Silylated Sm3+ and Eu3+ Complexes Incorporated Into Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, EarlyView.
The strategy of incorporating the Eu(tta‐Si)3(phen) and Sm(tta‐Si)3(phen)2 complexes prevented leaching of the complexes and preserved their intrinsic optical properties. Preliminary studies of silylated Ln3+ complexes and nanoparticles loaded with these complexes demonstrated cytotoxicity against cancer cells, with minimal cytotoxic effect on nontumor

An Outbreak of Severe Infections with Community-Acquired MRSA Carrying the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin Following Vaccination

open access: yes, 2007
Background: Infections with community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) are emerging worldwide. We investigated an outbreak of severe CA-MRSA infections in children following out-patient vaccination. Methods and Findings:

Dynamics of Heparin Translocations Through Solid‐State Nanopores

open access: yesELECTROPHORESIS, EarlyView.
Carbohydrates can be detected with solid‐state nanopores, but their kinetics of voltage‐driven passage are fast. To better understand the dynamics of passage of these biomolecules and the role of electrophoresis and electroosmosis, we studied the translocation characteristics of heparin as a function of salt concentration, pH and voltage polarity ...
