As was shown in the previous chapter, many solids are composed of pseudospherical particles forming close-packed assemblies. The free space in such an arrangement amounts to about 26% of the total volume. Let us now see what happens when we melt such a solid, e.g., copper. Experiment shows that its volume increases by 3%.
