Pennisetum purpureum is an important forage grass belonging to section Penicillaria of Gramineae, and is closely related to pearl millet (P. americanum). It is a rhizomatous perennial commonly called napier grass or elephant grass, perhaps due to its large size.

Fermentation losses of cactus silages with elephant grass

This study proposes to evaluate fermentation losses and dry matter recovery rate in cactus silages with elephant grass. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with eight replicates. Treatments consisted of cactus silages with increasing levels of elephant grass (10, 20, 30 and 40 % on a fresh-weight basis).

A Unique Virus Isolated from Elephant Grass

A virus was isolated from leaves of elephant grass plants (Pennisetum purpureum) showing mosaic symptoms. It was mechanically transmitted to a few cultivars of corn (Zea mays) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), but other test plants, including elephant grass, could not be infected.
