The effects of temperature-elevation gradients on snowmelt in a high-elevation watershed
The majority of snowmelt in the western U.S. occurs at high elevation where hydrometeorological measurements needed for monitoring snowpack processes are often in complex terrain. Data are often extrapolated based on point measurements at lower elevation stations and the elevation to be modeled.

Ecological convergence of secondary phytochemicals along elevation gradients
Biologists still strive to identify the ecological and evolutionary drivers of phytochemical variation that mediates biotic interactions. We hypothesized that plant species growing at sites characterized by high herbivore pressure would converge to produce highly toxic blends of secondary metabolites, independently of phylogenetic constraints.

Diversity Patterns of Dung Beetles along a Mediterranean Elevational Gradient [PDF]
Most studies of biodiversity–elevational patterns do not take species abundance into consideration. Hill numbers are a unified family of indices that use species abundance and allow a complete characterization of species assemblages through diversity profiles.

Background Species turnover (β-diversity) along elevational gradients is one of the most important concepts in plant ecology. However, there is a lack of consensus about the main driving mechanisms of tree β-diversity at local scales in very diverse ...

Analysis of tropical and temperate elevational gradients in arthropod abundance [PDF]
Arthropods are a major component of ecosystems, in terms of both their biomass and the variety of functional roles they play. Yet we lack a clear understanding of how arthropod abundance changes along environmental gradients.

Elevational ground/air thermal gradients in the Swiss inner Alpine Valais [PDF]
The dependence of air temperature on elevation (i.e., its elevational gradient) in the mountains is well known. However, the elevational gradient of near-surface ground temperatures and derived thermal parameters is much less understood.

Diverse elevational diversity gradients in great smoky mountains national park, U.S.A. [PDF]
© 2010 by Taylor and Francis Group, LLC. Less well studied, however, are the factors that shape elevational diversity gradients. Because many climatic factors vary systematically along elevational gradients, as they might along latitudinal gradients ...

Local plant adaptation across a subarctic elevational gradient [PDF]
Predicting how plants will respond to global warming necessitates understanding of local plant adaptation to temperature. Temperature may exert selective effects on plants directly, and also indirectly through environmental factors that covary with temperature, notably soil properties.

Little is known about how nematode ecology differs across elevational gradients. We investigated the soil nematode community along a ~2,200 m elevational range on Mt. Norikura, Japan, by sequencing the 18S rRNA gene.

Elevation plays a crucial factor in the distribution of plants, as environmental conditions become increasingly harsh at higher elevations. Previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of large-scale elevational gradients on plants, with little ...
