Towards Fast and Accurate Ellipse and Semi-Ellipse Detection
2018 25th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2018Ellipse detection is an important task in machine vision and can be used to solve other high-level visual problems. In the past, many studies have been conducted by researchers at high precision ellipse fitting, but most of the proposed solutions are not fast enough to be applied in real-time detection for larger images or with limited hardware ...

With the aid of a duality relation originally obtained in the theory of statistical experimental design, an exact terminating algorithm is developed for finding the ellipse of smallest area covering a given plane point set. Some applications and related problems are discussed.

We present an ellipse finding and fitting algorithm that uses points and tangents, rather than just points, as the basic unit of information. These units are analyzed in a hierarchy: points with tangents are paired into triangles in the first layer and pairs of triangles in the second layer vote for ellipse centers.
