Focusing of an N wave by an ellipsoidal reflector: An experiment in air

An airborne experiment to model the intense pulse field developed by a lithotripter is in progress. The reflector is half an ellipsoid, machined from an aluminum block and having the following dimensions: major axis 280 mm, minor axis 140 mm, eccentricity 0.866, distance from aperture plane to either focus 121 mm.

Longitudinal pumping by an ellipsoidal reflector for short-wavelength lasers

We have designed and tested an ellipsoidal reflector to pump short-wavelength lasers by soft x-ray radiation from laser produced plasma. A gaseous medium supplied by a slit nozzle was pumped longitudinally along the optical axis in the region of the second focus. Soft x-ray absorption and VUV emission of gaseous medium have been investigated.

The caustic fields of offset ellipsoidal reflectors: a comparative study

Acoustic and cavitation fields of a pressure release ellipsoidal reflector

In an electrohydraulic lithotripter (device to treat kidney stones), an underwater spark at the near focus of a rigid ellipsoidal reflector produces acoustic cavitation at the far focus. A reflector made of pressure release foam, however, dramatically reduces cavitation with little change in acoustic pressure amplitude (∼ +35 MPa, ∼−10 MPa).

We propose a new geometry for collecting and focusing soft x-ray radiation from a laser-produced plasma which offers collection efficiencies greater than 20% and aspect ratios of more than 50.
