A Cosmological Framework for the Co-Evolution of Quasars, Supermassive Black Holes, and Elliptical Galaxies. I. Galaxy Mergers and Quasar Activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We develop a model for the cosmological role of mergers in the evolution of starbursts, quasars, and spheroidal galaxies. By combining theoretically well-constrained halo and subhalo mass functions as a function of redshift and environment with empirical

The (galaxy-wide) IMF in giant elliptical galaxies: From top to bottom [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Recent evidence based independently on spectral line strengths and dynamical modelling point towards a non-universal stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF), probably implying an excess of low-mass stars in elliptical galaxies with a high velocity dispersion.

New Analysis of Dark Matter in Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMNRAS, 518, 2, 2845-2852 (2023), 2022
We investigate a correlation between the dark matter content of elliptical galaxies and their ellipticity that was initially reported in 2014. We use new determinations of dark matter and ellipticities that are posterior to that time. Our data set consists of 237 elliptical galaxies passing a strict set of criteria.

The Shapes and Ages of Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1996
Normally elliptical galaxies are thought to be old, evolved systems, but recently a controversy has arisen over the age of ellipticals. Measurements by Gonzáles (1993, Ph.D. thesis, UCSC) show that the Hβ absorption indices of ellipticals span a range of values.

Investigation of the Fundamental Plane Relationship For the Evolution of the Elliptical and Lenticular Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesمجلة التربية والعلم
The Fundamental Plane relates the effective radius and surface brightness of an early-type galaxy to its velocity dispersion. It is important in understanding galaxy formation and evolution processes. The present work aims to investigate this relation as

Mass Dependence of Galaxy–Halo Alignment in LOWZ and CMASS

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We measure the galaxy-ellipticity (GI) correlations for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 LOWZ and CMASS samples with the shape measurements from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys.

Resequencing the Hubble sequence and the quadratic (black hole mass)-(spheroid stellar mass) relation for elliptical galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMNRAS (2023) 522, 3588, 2023
One of the most protracted problems in astronomy has been understanding the evolution of galaxy morphology. Much discussion has surrounded how lenticular galaxies may form a bridging population between elliptical and spiral galaxies. However, with recourse to a galaxy's central black hole mass, accretion-built spiral galaxies have emerged as the ...

THE DYNAMICAL FINGERPRINT OF CORE SCOURING IN MASSIVE ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The most massive elliptical galaxies have low-density centers or cores that differ dramatically from the high-density centers of less massive ellipticals and bulges of disk galaxies.

A Preferential Growth Channel for Supermassive Black Holes in Elliptical Galaxies at z ≲ 2

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The assembly of stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in elliptical galaxies since z ∼ 1 can help to diagnose the origins of locally observed correlations between SMBH mass and stellar mass.
