Inherent magnetic field error measurements in ELMO Bumpy Torus

open access: yesReview of Scientific Instruments, 1985
The inherent magnetic field error and its radial distribution in the closed field line device of ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) have been measured with an electron beam probe. It is found that the field error is almost radially uniform and is about ΔB≤4 G at an average field of B≂7.2 kG. This yields ΔB/B≂5×10−4, which is large enough to open the confined drift

Wave heating models for ion-cyclotron heating in EBT-S [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
Wave heating of ELMO BUMPY TORUS-SCALE (EBT-S) in the ion-cyclotron range of frequencies will be strongly influenced by the geometry of the plasma. In particular, the short finite length of the mirror sections means that the electron bounce frequency is ...

Research support for plasma diagnostics on Elmo Bumpy Torus: investigation of diamagnetic diagnostics for the electron rings [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
Diamagnetic diagnostics for the EBT electron rings are fundamental to the experiment. The diamagnetic flux pickup loops on each cavity output signals proportional to ring perpendicular energy. A data analysis technique is described, which in its simplest

Beta enhancement by relativistic electron rings in bumpy tori [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
The maximum achievable beta (ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic pressure) value in a bumpy torus such as Elmo (EBT) is determined primarily by the stability of the system to the interchange modes.

Observation of whistler wave instability driven by temperature anisotropy of energetic electrons on EXL-50 spherical torus

open access: yes, 2023
Electromagnetic modes in the frequency range of 30-120MHz were observed in electron cyclotron wave (ECW) steady state plasmas on the ENN XuanLong-50 (EXL-50) spherical torus.

Technical assessment of critical Plasma-Materials Interaction (PMI) and High Heat Flux (HHF) issues for alternative fusion concepts (AFCs) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
A number of approaches to fusion energy are being pursued as alternative fusion concepts (AFCs). The goal of these systems is to provide a more desirable method of producing fusion energy than the mainline programs. Some of the AFCs have both a Low Power

Radial mode structure of curvature-driven instabilities in EBT [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
Viewgraphs describe the theoretical treatment of the radial mode structure of plasma instabilities in the Elmo Bumpy Torus. The calculation retains nonlocal structure of the modes, connects inner and outer ring regions together, uses a self-consistent ...

Ion confinement and transport in a toroidal plasma with externally imposed radial electric fields [PDF]

open access: yes
Strong electric fields were imposed along the minor radius of the toroidal plasma by biasing it with electrodes maintained at kilovolt potentials. Coherent, low-frequency disturbances characteristic of various magnetohydrodynamic instabilities were ...
