Effects of Sediment‐Control Operations on Fish and Macroinvertebrate Communities in Dam Reservoirs
ABSTRACT Sediments are avoided in many river and dam managements because of their adverse effects on water usage and flood control. Recently, sedimentation control measures, including sluicing, have been employed to manage sediments in river channels and restore communities in dammed rivers.

Optimization of compaction zoning in loess embankments
Extensive centrifuge model tests were carried out to investigate optimum compaction density zones within loess embankments 30 and 63.8 m high. In these tests, water infiltration into the slopes and upstream storm water ponds were modelled to simulate ...

Abstract The Ajay River, originating from the Chotanagpur Plateau (Bihar) and flowing through Jharkhand into West Bengal before merging with the Bhagirathi‐Hugli near Katwa, is among the most flood‐prone rivers in the region. Its lower reaches frequently experience rainfall‐induced flooding and embankment breaches during the mid‐ to late‐monsoon season.

A review of empirical dam breach models
Abstract Dam breach modelling is central to flood risk assessment, yet the empirical models commonly used for estimating breach parameters display considerable variability and uncertainty. This review evaluates the performance of widely applied empirical dam breach models and identifies those that consistently show lower uncertainty, such as the ...

Risks of concealing environmental degradation
Abstract Current practice seeks to conceal the visual impact of land‐use change (i.e., development). Six percent of development impact assessments in Australia and 14% of the World Bank's assessments recommend visual impact mitigation. This mitigation results in, for example, vegetated buffer strips alongside cleared agricultural areas and earthen ...

Centrifuge modelling of piled embankments [PDF]
It is becoming increasingly necessary to construct on land that was previously considered inappropriate for construction, such as soft clay. The properties of soft clay make it highly compressible and low in shear strength, meaning that bearing capacity ...

Abstract Kenya's aquaculture sector is at a pivotal stage, transitioning from a historical reliance on Nile tilapia and African catfish toward a more diversified production portfolio that integrates indigenous and emerging freshwater and marine species. This shift is increasingly recognized as essential to enhance climate resilience, food security, and

Abstract Losses to avian predators and the ensuing negative economic effects on US catfish farms have been well studied in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. This study is the first to estimate the economic effects of predation by double‐crested cormorants (Nannopterum auritum) on catfish farms in the Black Belt region (West Alabama and East Mississippi;

Abstract Poyang Lake, China's largest floodplain lake, plays a crucial role in regional hydrology by seasonally regulating water to mitigate floods and sustain extensive wetland ecosystems. However, complex hydrodynamics and significant spatial hydraulic gradients often invalidate the traditional “flat‐water” assumption, making reliable estimation of ...
