Settlements of Embankments in Soft Soils

open access: yes, 2010
The major part of this paper is on the challenges in predicting settlements in highway embankments and reclamation works in marine, deltaic and estuarine type of deposits.

Modelling of fine soils railway embankments behaviour under real cyclic loads

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
Before the development of regulations, standards and guides for infrastructure building, embankments were generally constructed, by reusing and compacting the excavation materials.

Selected Physical and Geotechnical Properties of Loess in Wairarapa Valley, New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 4, December 2026.
Loess up to 10 m thick covers marine terraces, old river aggradation terraces, and gentle hill country slopes in Wairarapa, New Zealand. In the drier eastern and southern parts of Wairarapa, the loess is subject to dry summer and autumn and wet winter and spring in most years.

Exploring the Potential of Unmanned Aerial System‐Based Topographic Indices Maps to Evaluate Storm Drain Positioning

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 19, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Urbanisation, climate uncertainty, and limited city budgets have heightened the need for efficient urban drainage management. While advanced hydrodynamic models assess the performance of drainage networks, they are computationally intensive, time‐consuming, and expensive.

Embankments Built Over Swamps [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Time and environmental constraints necessitated the development of unique methods for building earthen embankments over very deep and soft swamp deposits. Three case histories are presented.

Adding the Farmer Domain to Aquifer Recharge: Insights From Smallholder Farmers' Natural Water Retention Measures in the Danube–Tisza Interfluve, Hungary

open access: yesWorld Water Policy, Volume 12, Issue 4, November 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper describes and analyzes recharge practices in Bács‐Kiskun County, Hungary, within what can be categorized as the farmer domain. Such locally embedded aquifer recharge practices remain underexplored in Hungary. Current research and funding largely focus on large‐scale Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) interventions emphasizing intended ...

Water retention characterization of non-woven geotextiles: An application for wicking materials [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Non-woven geotextiles are commonly used in soil embankments for separation, filtration, and drainage purposes. While these conventional geotextiles can effectively drain gravitational water from saturated embankments, they often struggle to drain ...

Interpreting Non‐Linear Compaction Mechanics of Expansive Soils Using Reliability Calibrated Framework

open access: yesApplied Research, Volume 5, Issue 5, October 2026.
This study introduces a reliability‐calibrated machine learning framework to predict the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of heterogeneous soils. By integrating 15 algorithms with conformal prediction, the models deliver accurate compaction estimates alongside rigorous, distribution‐free 90% confidence intervals.

Ice overtopping of embankments: ice-tank experiments and field observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Ice-sheet overtopping poses a problem for embankments adjoining large water bodies in cold regions. The problem is akin to wave loading and overtopping, though the water level is well below embankment crest level.

West European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) Decline in Great Britain: Evidence From Multiple National‐Scale Surveys

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
We combined and assessed multiple national‐scale monitoring datasets for the West European hedgehog. They suggest a long‐term and concerning abundance decline in agricultural landscapes but apparently stable trends in urban areas. These results have important implications for wider farmland biodiversity in Britain, as well as hedgehog conservation ...
