Embedded Systems as Datacenters
2010Designing embedded systems the way we did 20 years ago is still alive and well. As expected, with declining costs, embedded systems are appearing in more and more applications. Advances to the state of the art in creating such systems, where memory and processor are precious resources, have continued, and this work is to be applauded.

Embedded System Paranoia: a tool for testing embedded system arithmetic
Information and Software Technology, 2005The quality of arithmetic implementation is of concern to all who work with or depend on the results of numerical computations. Embedded systems have become enormously complicated and widespread in most if not all consumer devices in recent years so there is a clear need to measure the quality of the arithmetic in the same way that conventional systems

The Challenges of Embedded System Design
Proceedings of the 3rd IEEE/ACM/IFIP international conference on Hardware/software codesign and system synthesis, 2005As complexity grows the importance of system level exploration, design, verification and debug becomes inescapable. However while there has been great progress in process technology, tools and methodologies resulting in ever more sophisticated platforms some of the critical design parameters have been moving in the wrong direction.

Historically there have been almost as many System Area Network (SAN) designs as there are parallel computing researchers. However, as markets mature, standards evolve. The personal computing industry is working towards a low-level, OS bypass API for leveraging arbitrary SANs from Windows NT. This new API is called the “Virtual Inter- face Architecture”

Moving from embedded systems to embedded computing
Proceedings of the 2003 international conference on Compilers, architecture and synthesis for embedded systems, 2003In the middle of the last decade, there was a large gulf between embedded systems and general-purpose computing. Most researchers and advanced developers in general-purpose computing thought naively that real-time considerations added a little twist, but after that it was mostly a matter of size.
