Embedded plateau problem [PDF]

open access: yesTransactions of the American Mathematical Society, 2012
We show that if C is a simple closed curve bounding an embedded disk in a closed 3-manifold M, then there exists a disk D in M with boundary C such that D minimizes the area among the embedded disks with boundary C. Moreover, D is smooth, minimal and embedded everywhere except where the boundary C meets the interior of D.

Stable Embedded Solitons [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2003
Stable embedded solitons are discovered in the generalized third-order nonlinear Schroedinger equation. When this equation can be reduced to a perturbed complex modified KdV equation, we developed a soliton perturbation theory which shows that a continuous family of sech-shaped embedded solitons exist and are nonlinearly stable.

The production of relative clauses in Italian-speaking children with DLD

open access: yesIsogloss
Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have been shown to struggle with the acquisition of complex structures requiring structural embedding and movement of a sentential element from its original position. This study examines the production

A protocol for high-quality sectioning for tree-ring anatomy

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Quantitative wood anatomy (QWA), which involves measuring wood cell anatomical characteristics commonly on dated tree rings, is becoming increasingly important within plant sciences and ecology.

Embedded monopoles

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2002
Using the embedded defect method, we classify the possible embeddings of a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole in a general gauge theory. We then discuss some similarities with embedded vortices and relate our results to fundamental monopoles.

A procedure for correcting the position of plant tissue samples in accidentally polymerized glycol methacrylate resin

open access: yesHoehnea, 2019
Glycol methacrylate resin is a very convenient medium used for inclusions of various types of tissue for histological and cytological studies. It provides excellent mechanical support in the sectioning of samples, even the ones with big differences in ...

Embedding Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors to Obtain Online Pressure Profiles Inside Fiber Composite Laminates

open access: yesSensors, 2015
The production of large and complex parts using fiber composite materials is costly due to the frequent formation of voids, porosity and waste products.

Modal Adverbs in FDG: Putting the Theory to the Test

open access: yesOpen Linguistics, 2018
One of the distinctive features of the theory of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) is that it distinguishes various hierarchically organized layers of analysis, each of which is provided with a slot for modifiers relevant at the layer in question ...

Universal Scaling of Thin Current Sheets

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
Thin current sheets (TCSs) with thicknesses about ion Larmor radii are widespread in space. It is important to describe their equilibrium structure allowing them to store and then explosively release the accumulated free energy.

Nearest Embedded and Embedding Self-Nested Trees [PDF]

open access: yesAlgorithms, 2019
Self-nested trees present a systematic form of redundancy in their subtrees and thus achieve optimal compression rates by directed acrylic graph (DAG) compression. A method for quantifying the degree of self-similarity of plants through self-nested trees was introduced by Godin and Ferraro in 2010.
